Obituary

Norman Ray Forson, 94 years old of Dallas, Texas, died peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Wednesday, October 11, 2023. Norman was born on July 12, 1929, in Port Arthur, Texas and was the eldest son to Hollis Garland Forson and Annie Ione Butler. Raised in San Antonio, Texas, Norman graduated from Brackenridge High School where he was part of the 1947 Brackenridge Eagles state championship football team. Norman received a football scholarship to attend Baylor University beginning in 1948, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and was a key contributor during Baylor's 1952 appearance in the Orange Bowl. Norman met his beloved wife of 69 years, Nancy Ann McAnelly, while studying at Baylor University. Nancy and Norman were married in Houston, Texas in 1952, and together they traveled the world as Norman served as a First Lieutenant in the Unites States Air Force from 1952-1956. After completing military service, Norman and Nancy settled in Nancy's hometown of Houston, Texas, where Norman began his professional career as a sales engineer at Magnet Cove Barium Corporation for one year, and then a buyer at Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line from 1957 to 1961, all the while continuing his education in order to earn a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Houston in 1961. With his freshly earned MBA degree, Norman began work with the national accounting firm of Ernst Ernst, rising to the rank of supervising auditor. In 1965, Norman took on the role of Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Comptroller at Gulf Western Industries, Inc. During his 15 years with Gulf Western, Norman was an integral part of the company's growth into one of the largest conglomerates in the world through over 100 acquisitions. Norman's tenure with Gulf Western eventually led him to New York City where he continued to work until 1983. Nancy and Norman raised their two children, Diana and Jim, in the New York suburb of New Canaan, Connecticut. Once Norman's run with Gulf Western ended, he continued to make his mark in senior financial leadership roles at several companies on the east coast including Hi-Shear Industries, Inc., Jonathan Logan Inc., and United Merchants Manufacturers until his well-earned retirement in 1997. Norman's loves outside of work included playing competitive handball at the New York Athletic Club and then later at the Four Seasons Resort and Club, where he enjoyed playing squash with friends into his 70s. He was also a very active dad in his children's lives, whether coaching their sports teams, being a spectator in the stands, or teaching them how to throw, catch, ride a bike, or drive a car. In retirement, Norman and Nancy decided to return to their native Texas in part so they could be in the same city as their children, who had settled in Dallas, but more so they could be near their grandchildren. And so, "Dad-Dad" and "Nana", became beloved grandparents, setting an example of kindness and love for all their grandchildren to follow.Norman was the patriarch and a monument within the family. He will be deeply missed by all of his loved ones. Norman is survived by his son, James Hollis Forson and his wife Laura Mayer Forson; his daughter Diana Forson Hamilton and her husband Steven Kent Hamilton; his four grandchildren, Cole James Forson, Tyler James Hamilton, Ella Catherine Forson, and Ryan McAnelly Forson; and his sister Barbara Prate of Port Arthur, Texas. Norman's wife Nancy preceded him in death by just 19 months and the entire family is so thankful that they are together once again. Norman will be laid to rest with his wife Nancy during a private family ceremony at the Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. He was a friend to all he met, an adored husband to his wife, a hard-working example to his employees, and a true Superman to his children and grandchildren. Norman will be forever in our hearts.
