Eleanor Mae (Miller) Peterson, 91-year-old long-time resident of Yreka in northern California, passed away on September 22, 2017, in Plano, Texas, where she had moved four years ago to be near her daughter Lynette Cecil and family. Eleanor was born November 5, 1925, in Tacoma, Washington, to Jacob and Elfreda (Monson) Miller. Five years later they moved back to the family farm west of Valley City, North Dakota, where Eleanor attended the same school for sixteen years. Eleanor was the youngest in a family of two boys and two girls. After completing "normal school" (a teaching college in Valley City) and teaching one year, Eleanor married Lynn Arthur Peterson in Valley City on June 12, 1949. They moved to Whitefish, Montana, in 1951, where Lynn started working for Montana Power (later Pacific Power and Light). In 1963, they moved to Crescent City, California, where she taught at Del Norte High School. In 1969 Eleanor completed her Master's degree in Business Education, and they also moved to Yreka, where Eleanor taught typing and business at Yreka High School. After retiring in 1983, she, Lynn and her sister Clarice began traveling and volunteering for Christian groups across the USA and twelve countries. Eleanor was always very involved in their local church, especially the women's group and choir, faithfully living out her trust in God. She square danced with her husband and attended exercise classes and concerts with her sister. Two of her greatest joys were writing verses for many home-made cards (for Christmas, birthdays, etc.) and the annual trips to Montana and North Dakota to visit family and friends. She brightened up many people's days with her smile. Eleanor is survived by her son David and wife Connie of Yreka; her daughter, Lynette Cecil and her husband, Rick, of Plano, Texas; and her daughter Lori Gardner and her husband, Bill, in Langley, British Columbia. Seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, her older sister Clarice Cink, two sisters-in-law Arlean Keister and Elaine Beyer, and many nieces and nephews will miss her. Everyone will fondly remember her many creative cards and weekly letters. There will be no public memorial service. Inurnment will be held at Antelope Valley Cemetery in Oberon, North Dakota, at a time to be determined. Memorial contributions may be made to: Alzheimer's Association (ALZ.org), Mt. Zion Lutheran Church; 825 Knapp St., Yreka, California 96097; or Canada Institute of Linguistics student Scholarship fund, in memory of Eleanor and Lynn Peterson.
