Minnie Mokry Petrusek was born on February 1, 1922 in Granger, TX, to the late Charles and Hattie Mokry. She joined the kingdom of Heaven at age 93 on April 10, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Ben Petrusek. She is survived by daughter, Cynthia O'Donnell and son, Martin Petrusek (Debbie); grandchildren, Dana O'Donnell Pipkin(Shane) and their children Hannah Kate and Chase; Jeffrey O'Donnell (Holly); and Gregory O'Donnell (April) and their children Paisley and Kinley; Todd (Sativa) and their children Dustin, Nathan and Abby; Corey Petrusek Welsh (John) and their children Jack and Henry; and Brett Petrusek (Cary) and their child Noah. Minnie was the oldest of 4 daughters and is survived by sisters Hedy, Ann, Evelyn (Robert) and sister/brother -in-law Ruth and Johnnie; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Minnie will always be fondly remembered by her family and friends as a gracious and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Always ready to support and listen, she was a role model of love and kindness to every person she was around. Her devotion to God and her Catholic faith, specifically the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady, influenced her daily life. She always told us this was a gift from her Czech parents to be shared and lived. Her children and their families were always her priority. Family harmony mattered greatly to Minnie! Minnie lived through 9+ decades of life-changing events and was in awe of her young great-grandchildren on smart phones! They adored their "Momo"! Her grandchildren admired her ability to try anything new, even at 93 yrs young. She and Ben celebrated 53 years of a wonderful marriage during which they traveled all over the world, but always to visit their grandchildren in Memphis and Chicago. Other trips took them to Houston and Wallis to be with their parents, Minnie's three sisters/spouses and Bens family in Beaumont. Minnie (and Ben) lived in New Orleans for 33 yrs during which time Ben passed away in 1996. In 2001 she and Cynthia returned to their Texas roots and settled in Katy for 13 years and then to the Dallas area in 2013. Her final year of life was spent in McKinney, TX surrounded by her 4 great-grandchildren, to include a special reunion last Summer in Memphis with her additional 5 great-grandchildren and news of another on the way! Minnie was creative and accomplished in so many ways: She was a loving wife and mother, superb cook and seamstress, excellent hostess, devoted teacher, organic gardener, house plans drafter, oil painter and drawer, avid volunteer and charitable supporter, fluent in the CZ language, world traveler with Ben, a member of numerous organizations to include the Ladies Reserve Officers Assoc. and the Mardi Gras Krewe of Iris in New Orleans. She drove the tractor at 10 yrs old, the Model T at 13 yrs old, graduated from Granger High and went on to attend the University of Texas (and later Dominican College in New Orleans), working her way through school as a nanny. Following college she rode the troop train for 3 days during WW II from TX to NY to marry Ben. She initially taught high school geometry in Wallis followed by 30 years of dedicated service as a 3rd grade elementary school teacher in both Houston and New Orleans. And yet, with all of these remarkable talents, Minnie's lasting legacy will be that as her role as "Momo", advisor and listener, who shared her 93 yrs of life experiences and words of wisdom with loving care. She always placed God at the center of our lives in her own special way. Our sweet mother will be greatly missed, but always with a smile when we remember her life of love, kindness, unconditional prayers and care for those around her.
