Emily Carroll Rich, of Frisco, Texas, passed away on September 24, 2017 at the age of 58. She was born on September 7, 1959 in Denton, Texas to Carroll Young Rich and Betty Bowen Rich. Emily grew up in Denton, Texas, and was a graduate of Denton High School. After earning her Bachelor's degree at North Texas State University in Denton, with a double major in Journalism and English, she taught both subjects at Clark High School in Plano, Texas. At Clark, she was named New Teacher of the Year and was a nominee for the Perot Award for Excellence in Education. After teaching, she took a one-year assignment at the Dallas Morning News as program coordinator for education and literacy. During that year, she won the INPA Stars of the South Award for Learn to Read with the Dallas Morning News. For the majority of her career, she worked at EDS in Plano, Texas, in a variety of marketing communication roles. A gifted writer and creative thinker, she achieved recognition such as the IABC Gold, Silver, and Bronze Quill awards for her work on EDS' Year 2000 campaign, annual report, and United Way communications. Emily was an animal lover and delighted in her pets, which over the years included cats Calico, Buddy, and Katy, and dogs Daisy and Lily. Emily had a brilliant mind and a wonderful sense of humor. She was also a talented artist and enjoyed calligraphy, jewelry making, needlepoint, and stained glass. With a keen interest in medicine, she read extensively about a variety of medical topics. She was an excellent cook, collected cloisonn eggs, and loved the color blue. Over the years Emily had a number of serious health issues, and one of her passions became reaching out to others who were dealing with similar health challenges. Her knowledge, compassion, and encouragement were a comfort to many. She is preceded in death by her mother Betty Bowen Rich of Denton, Texas, and her grandparents Nan Hart Bowen and Leon O. Bowen of Cleburne, Texas, and Alice Lyons Rich and Douglas Rich of Arcadia, Louisiana. Emily is survived by her father, Carroll Rich of Denton, sister Ann Bacon of Plano, nephew Michael Bacon of Plano, extended family, and dear friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to the Chiari & Syringomyelia Foundation or to the SPCA of Texas. A private family interment will take place later this year in Cleburne, Texas.
