Richard Cleveland
Harvey
Jan 13, 1936 — May 20, 2026
Richard "Dick" Cleveland Harvey, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, was born on January 13, 1936, to Kathryn Platner and Cleveland Harvey in Hudson, New York, and passed away on May 20, 2026, in Richardson, Texas, surrounded by his family.
Growing up in Livingston, New York, Dick's mother taught him in the town's one-room schoolhouse for three years. He was very proud of his New York roots. After graduating from Hudson High School in 1955, Dick joined the United States Navy as a Fire Control Technician aboard the USS Collette. He served with distinction during the Korean War, primarily in the Pacific, bearing witness to history during an A-bomb test. Afterward, he enrolled at Glendale College in California where an accounting class changed his career trajectory.
In March of 1959, a chance encounter on the balcony at Glendale First United Methodist Church would change the course of his life forever, as it's where he met the love of his life, Jolynne Bush Harvey. The two were married in 1962 in Glendale, California.
Dick went on to earn his degree in accounting from Cal State LA in 1963 and passed the CPA exam on his first try. He began his professional career with Alexander Grant (later Grant Thornton) before being recruited to join Centex Corporation in 1967. He and Jolynne moved to Dallas, Texas, where they would build a life together. Over the next 35 years, Dick built a distinguished career at Centex, serving as Vice President of Tax until his retirement in December 2002. He was known throughout his career as an ethical businessman who was deeply respected.
Dick and Jolynne joined First United Methodist Church of Richardson in 1967, where he remained a devoted and active member until his death. He served the church as the chair of many organizations, including the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and Pastor Parish Relations Committee. He helped establish the Ark House ministry in 1986. His faith was not merely a Sunday practice—it was the compass by which he lived.
He was a man who loved the open road, traveling to all 50 states and 39 national parks with a pickup camper, motorhome, and an International Scout for four-wheeling.
His passion for speed extended beyond the highway, as he was a devoted NASCAR fan who was gifted a retirement trip to Daytona. During his travels, Dick developed a love of photography. His photographs adorn the walls of their homes.
In 1984, Dick and Jolynne bought a home at Cedar Creek Lake, inviting countless friends and family members to the lake's shores—including 75 groups from church. He loved pulling the grandkids on tubes and going fast on his Wave Runner. He didn't sit down at the lake until his 80s.
Dick also loved building things and designed furniture pieces that are still used today, including a picnic table at the lake. In retirement, he volunteered for over 2,000 hours at the Dallas Arboretum.
Above all else, he loved his family. He adored his grandchildren and treasured every moment spent with them. In retirement, he also visited often with his first cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Gene Stauber and Marjorie Parks, and niece, Elaine Stauber.
He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 64 years, Jolynne, his daughter Kalynne (Michael) and granddaughters Jacqueline and Julia Welsh of Springfield, Virginia, his daughter Melinda (Stacey) and grandchildren Sophie, Margaux, and Ian Lawrence of Richardson, Texas, and his niece Michele Crockett of Nine Mile Falls, Washington, as well as several cousins.
A service celebrating his life will be held at First United Methodist Church of Richardson on May 26, 2026, at 1:00 PM in the sanctuary. Dick requested more casual attire (no suits) and bright colors. The service will also be livestreamed www.fumcr.com/memorial
