Richard Lewis Spotts, Jr., age 87, died on March 11, 2023, in the presence of his loving children.
Richard was born on April 18, 1935, in Canton, Ohio to Richard Lewis Sr and Jean Spotts. He was the oldest of four children. They moved to St. Cloud, Florida where he grew up and enjoyed the outdoors with his siblings. He became a lifelong fan of John Wayne and listened to Glenn Miller Big Band swing music. He served in the Army for 2 years in Germany. Richard decided to enlist in the Air Force where he was stationed in Clark AFB, the Philippines in 1962. Shortly thereafter, he pursued Iluminada "Lani" Macapanas. As a rule, she did not date servicemen. However, Richard liked a challenge and her beautiful smile. He won Lani's heart, and they were married for 46 years until her passing. While serving our country, he was awarded the Bronze Star. After his two decades of military service, he became a technical writer. He retired to St. Joseph Beach, Florida in 2002 where he led bible studies and served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Richard was preceded in death by his wife Lani, their youngest son, Robert, and his youngest brother Donald. Richard is survived by his children, Eileen Cosby (Joseph), Fort Valley, VA, Barbara Hanna (James),Houston, TX and Richard Lewis, III,Frisco, Texas. Richard is also survived by his grandchildren, Jordon Lehr (Greyson), Jared Lehr, Thomas Cosby, Ella, Caleb, and Genevieve Spotts, his great grandsons Cody Lee Lehr and Cameron Garret Lehr, his brother, Robert Spotts and sister, Barbara Spotts Finch, along with numerous nephews and nieces both in the U.S. and the Philippines.
Richard had a heart for the work at St. Jude's Hospital. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor with St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105
A Memorial Mass will be offered March 14, 2023 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Frisco, Texas at 4:00 pm. Richard will be laid to rest at The Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery on March 16th at 9:15 am.
