Richard Herbert Varien

Richard Varien was born in San Antonio, Texas on November 18, 1952. The Varien family moved several times when Richard was growing up, but most of his early years were spent in Denver, Colorado and San Angelo, Texas. Richard's parents—Dick and Merrill Varien—were both from Minnesota, and the Varien family traveled there every year for their summer vacations.

Richard was an excellent athlete and served as the captain of the San Angelo Central High School track team during his senior year in 1971. He continued playing sports during his adult life, becoming an excellent tennis player and golfer.

Richard began his working career in construction, and he used these skills throughout his life. After a time, he returned to school and became trained as a physical therapist assistant, living and working for many years in Brenham, Texas. He retired in 2019 and moved back to San Angelo where his mother still lived. That same year he suffered a fall that left him paralyzed, and he then moved to Dallas, Texas where he lived until he died on December 25, 2025.

Richard was a kind and caring individual. He loved his family, including mother and father, his brother Mark, his sister Anne, and all of his relatives in Minnesota. He became especially close to Anne's two children and their families, Andy and Gen Paulsen and their three children Mattie, Charlotte, and Jack, and Andy and Molly Parker and their two children Warren and Micah. The Parker family lived close to Richard in Dallas, and they took care of him after his accident.

Richard was deeply loved by his family and friends who will continue to cherish his memory.
