Obituary

On Friday May 1, 2026, Dallas closed the final chapter of a renowned architect who helped shape the skyline of downtown in the 1980's. Robert Joe Boyd was born in Dallas on July 22, 1942, to Harry and Noel Boyd. Winning numerous artistic awards, he realized at a very early age that he had a passion for architecture. He applied to Texas A & M and completed a grueling schedule graduating in 1966 with a dual master's in architecture and structural engineering. He achieved this by overcoming insurmountable odds as he was also supporting his wife and two small children. He was an excellent architect and got his early training with the prestigious firm of Harwood K. Smith.

Upon resigning from HKS he cofounded the architectural firm of Shepherd and Boyd. Under his management the firm prospered and grew to become the second largest architectural firm in Dallas with over 200 employees. Two of the most notable projects were his involvement in the concept and design for the iconic Mansion on Turtle Creek as Designer and Project Architect with Caroline Rose Hunt and The Sands Family in 1981. Additionally, the Crescent Hotel, a joint venture between Rosewood Properties Inc, and Shepherd and Boyd as Project Architect in conjunction with Johnson and Burgee, NYC Design Architects.

Robert went on to found Robert Boyd Architects which was successful until his retirement.

He is survived by his loving wife Kathy, his two children, Ronnie and Deena, and stepdaughter Sarah Fahey as well as many grandchildren.
