Ruth Fernley
Sharadin
Jul 29, 1938 — Jan 28, 2026
Ruth Fernley Sharadin, 87, passed away peacefully on January 28th, 2026. She was born on July 29th, 1938 in Philadelphia, PA to Thomas and Ruth Fernley. "Ruth Anne" grew up in Philadelphia and was the middle of 3 children. She graduated from an all-girls school, Springside School, in 1956. She met and married William David Sharadin in 1959. As a military spouse, she lovingly followed Bill to Montgomery, AL, Savannah, GA, Travis AFB, CA, Wilmington, DE while "Bill" was in Vietnam for a year, Holloman AFB, NM, and twice to both San Antonio, TX and Lakenheath, England. Ruth Anne was the proud mother to 4 children. Besides being stationed around America and in England, she and Bill took their family on adventures all over America and Europe. In the late 1970's she went to University of Texas at San Antonio and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. They moved to Benbrook, TX in 2004 to be close to their 4 youngest grandchildren. It gave them all a great opportunity to do life together for the past 20 years.
Growing up, Ruth Anne spent summers at camp in Maine and in the Poconos. She learned French and rode horses. She was an avid tennis player, playing well into her 70's. At school she also played field hockey and lacrosse.
Ruth Anne was a devoted wife for almost 65 years. She loved being a stay-at-home mom, serving her family in so many capacities from meals to baking, carpools, support of many sports, drama, and band activities for her children and grandchildren, and beyond. She sewed and taught driving (while not all of her driving tips should be followed)! Both at home and away, she taught Bible study to all ages. She served in Bible Study Fellowship Headquarters stuffing envelopes with Bill, too. She loved Jesus above all else, which gave her the love and strength to love others so well. Early in their marriage, she and Bill hosted many a lively evening, sometimes bridge games, and sometimes a barbeque at the lake. She was a loving, giving, and loyal friend, known for her dry sense of humor. She remained in contact with friends from high school, and others from various places where the family lived over the years.
Ruth Anne was preceded in death by her parents Thomas Adamson Fernley, Jr., Ruth Allen Fernley, husband William David Sharadin, siblings Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Cotton, Thomas Adamson Fernley, III. She was also preceded in death by son, William David Sharadin, Jr., son-in-law Michael Bennett (Annie), son-in-law Darren Stinchcomb (Karen) and granddaughter, Hannah Bennett Drake (Major Joseph).
She is survived by three daughters Annie Atkinson (Dave) of Turlock, CA, Karen Stinchcomb of Fort Worth, TX and Sally McWhorter (Todd) of Benbrook, TX. She dearly loved her 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, along with countless nieces and nephews and their families, and extended family members.
