Obituary

THE REV. ERIC NOLAN SCHULZE Pastor Eric Nolan Schulze of Hurst died peacefully in his home on Monday, August 8, 2016. He was born November 4, 1934, in Bryan, Texas, the son of Nolan and Margaret Schulze. At a youth leadership school in 1950, he began considering the pastoral ministry as a vocation. He graduated as salutatorian from San Marcos High School at the age of 16. In 1955, he received his BA degree from Texas Lutheran College in Seguin, Texas; and in 1959, he received his M. Div. degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA. He pursued additional graduate study at the University of Erlangen, Germany in 1959-60; and at Rice University, Houston, TX in 1960-61. Pastor Schulze was ordained on June 25, 1961. He accepted the call to start a new congregation, Atonement Lutheran Church, on the west side of San Antonio, TX, which grew to 590 members in eight years. While there he helped establish the Lackland Area Ministerial Association and the Valley Hi Optimist Club. In April 1969 he accepted the call to become pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church, Richland Hills, TX. "Pastor Eric" served there until his retirement in January, 2004. During this time, Calvary thrived and had three building programs. He served several years as a member and chairman of the North East Emergency Distribution Board of Directors; member and chairman of the Board of Directors of Briarwood Lutheran Retreat Center; and member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Lutheran University Alumni Association. He was active in Via de Cristo of North Texas, serving as spiritual director numerous times and as a member of the Secretariat. Pastor Schulze also enjoyed leading Calvary's Stephen Ministry program; mentoring a number of pastoral interns through the years; and organizing and leading wonderful tours for church members to Germany, Italy and Greece. He loved camping, the mountains, traveling, sports (especially the Texas Rangers), and music (opera and symphony). He was passionate about his children, grandchildren and his Calvary congregation. Pastor Eric is survived by his three caring children, Eric Nolan Schulze, Jr., and his wife Frankie of Lakewood, CO, Kari Laraine Brandenburg and her husband Jonathan of Addison, TX, and Kristen Marie Flabiano and her husband, Darin of Dallas, TX; two adoring grandchildren, Christopher Charles Flabiano and Chloe Marie Flabiano; two loving sisters, Dorothea (Dorry) Shaddock and her husband Carroll of Houston, Texas, and Mary Neuendorf and her husband Klaus of Salem, Oregon; sister-in-law Raquel Schulze, wife of his late brother John of Austin, TX; four nephews, Christoph John Neuendorf, Christian Shaddock, Peter Eric Shaddock and Matthew Nolan Shaddock; niece Renate Neuendorf; former wife, mother of his children, close friend and confidant, Gail Grundman; and the greatest group of friends anyone could ask for within the Calvary congregation.
