Silver Sidney Poteete
October 9, 1933 - December 9, 2025
Silver Sidney Poteete passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of December 9th.
The day before, she was happily visiting with friends and proudly showing off her holiday decorations and collection of orchids and Amaryllis which filled the windows of her cozy Juliette Fowler apartment.
Silver was born October 9, 1933, at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, one of three girls and five boys born to Roger Milton Graf and Velma Hodges. Silver loved to say they were far from rich, but blessed with health and happiness.
She grew up in Dallas, and that's where Billy Joe Poteete captured her heart. They married at West Shore Presbyterian Church in 1957. In 1963, their son Darrell was born.
Silver's quick mind and sharp attention to detail launched her career in the Dallas headquarters of Branniff International Airways. She was a technical librarian, keeping track of maintenance records from 1964-1981.
She took advantage of the benefits her job offered, traveling the world with Bill and Darrell.
Silver never met a stranger. Her bright blue eyes, wide smile and genuine love of people came in handy at Quest Diagnostics and Raymond James Investments. Silver sat at the front desk where she was the first person clients saw. Her job title? CEO of First Impressions.
Silver and Bill loved the home they made in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas.
Faith was important to them. They attended Wynnewood Presbyterian Church for many years and when it closed, Trinity Presbyterian Church. Later, they joined First Presbyterian Church of Dallas where they were regulars, keeping the second row pew warm at the 8:30 a.m. service.
Sam the cat was the other man in Silver's life. He didn't last long as a stray, showing up in Silver and Bill's garage. He was family in no time- a constant companion.
Silver was always close to her Wynnewood North neighbors.
They were a second family to her after Bill's death in 2019. They looked after her and made sure she always had something in her fridge. They included her in neighborhood events, took her to doctor's appointments and threw her a huge 90th birthday party in 2023.
Silver never complained. She wheeled around in her walker, which she called her Cadillac, reminding everyone to, "Look for the good in everything. It's not what you get, it's how you handle it."
She is survived by her son Darrell, sisters Mary Kathryn of Houston, Jeanie Oney of Plano and nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life is planned at First Presbyterian Church of Dallas on February 7th at 11 am.
