Charles (Charlie) Sledge, MD, was born In Dallas, TX, October 10, 1939, to David and Georgia Sledge. He passed away, peacefully, on April 30, 2019, surrounded by family and friends, at Walnut Place, Dallas, TX. A mid-term graduate of Highland Park High School in 1958, he was a member of the Scots 1957 State Championship Football team, and proudly wore his letter jacket all of his life! Charlie was a graduate of SMU, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree, and began a Mathematical Statistics Masters scholarship program. He left the program to follow his dream of becoming a doctor. He attended UT Southwestern Medical School, graduating in 1967. Following an Internship at the Dallas VA Hospital. he became a Captain in the US Army, and served as a Battalion Surgeon in Korea, for thirteen months. There he was awarded a Meritorious Service Medal, and completed his service at Brooke Army Hospital, San Antonio, TX. Upon his return to Dallas, he began a three-year Residency in Internal Medicine, at the Dallas VA Hospital. He was awarded the positions of Chief Resident, and Assistant to the Chief of Medical Services. Following his Residency, he served on the VA Hospital teaching staff. During that time, Charlie, with eight of his medical school colleagues, began talking about, then planning to create a medical practice to focus on the highest quality of medical care. In December 1974, the Dallas Diagnostic Association became a reality, and it still exists today! Charlie practiced at Medical City Dallas, where he was Chief of Medicine. He retired from DDA in 2008, but continued to care for patients and the elderly at Walnut Place, where he was the Medical Director. Charlie had a love of fishing that began in the creeks and ponds of University Park. Lovingly known as "Papa," Charlie spent endless hours fishing the pond at Curtis Park with his beloved grandchildren. His passion for fishing led him on adventures around the world, including Alaska, the Amazon, Canada, Mexico, and every summer - the rivers of Colorado. He loved skiing, hiking, hunting, gardening, and sitting on his porch in Colorado with friends and family, laughing and planning more adventures. Growing up on Lovers Lane, Charlie was a son of the Park Cities and Dallas, who spent his entire adult life caring for, and easing the way for the sick and dying, and their loved ones. He seemed at restful peace in his last days, and well he should have been. He had served his community until the day he was no longer able to serve. There were truly two Charlie personas - the medical professional, and the funny jokester. The hilarious stories about Charlie are legendary, as are the stories of his expertise as a diagnostician, and compassionate and always patient-centered care. He was truly one-of-a-kind. Charlie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane York, two daughters - Mary Beth Troutt (Chris), and Ellen Hogan; five grandchildren - Lauren Mason (Peter), Lindsay Wilson Preston (Donovan), Hannah and Sam Troutt, and Amanda Hogan; six great-grandchildren - Jayce Wilson, Elizabeth and Madilyn Preston, Peter, John Charles, and Kaitlyn Mason; numerous family members, and scores of friends, colleagues, and grateful patients. On April 30, as Charlie left Walnut Place for the final time, family, friends, patients, and staff lined his way singing Amazing Grace, in his Honor. The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Walnut Place, for their loving care.
