Sue Cooper Garca, age 81, died at home on August 27, 2022. Born in Galveston, Sue grew up in Oak Cliff and, despite some years spent elsewhere, considered herself a lifelong Dallasite. She was a proud graduate of Sunset High School - "Bisons Forever" - and completed her bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Texas at Austin in journalism and education. Education was the defining feature of her working life, primarily spent in the Richardson Independent School District, where she worked as a curriculum consultant, elementary school principal, and central administrator over a career spanning 25 years. She spent the next 25 years in retirement, turning much of her considerable talents and energy to the creative work made traditionally by women for practical use, including knitting and quilting. She helped run an artisan's collective in Georgetown, TX, supported the work of individual artisans and practiced these crafts herself. She was devoted to her family and friends, and she was passionate about the issues of her life: free speech; women's lives, roles, and autonomy; and, above all, education. Sue is survived by her children: David Garca (Victoria Hastings), who lives on the pleasant prairie, and Katy Gray, who lives by the round rock; their children, Thomas, Daniel, Allison, and Patience; her niece Jenny Sue Wilbarger, nephew Andy Wilbarger, and grand-niece Nikki Ovens. She is preceded in death by her beloved sister Lynn Wilbarger and by her parents: John Robinson Cooper, who could fix anything, and Marjorie Webb Cooper, who gave her baton lessons when she really needed them. A memorial celebration is planned for later this fall.
