John Carl Thompson John Thompson died on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 in Dallas. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife, Joan Catherine. He is also survived by his daughter, Carline Thompson, and one brother, Bobby Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colorado. John's parents proceeded him in John further leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends to mourn his legacy and life. A Garland native, John was a World War II veteran who served in the Atlantic. John earned the title of "The Colonel", and during this time he was admired, appreciated and respected by his peers. He later worked a variety of jobs, all of which he enjoyed, as he had a passion for working on and repairing items with his hands. John's former employers, the John Deere Tractors, and also the Wasp Museum Project of Washington, DC and also the local Train Museum in Dallas were just a few of the many highlights of his career. John had an incredible sense of humor and a witty and gregarious personality. He enjoyed making others smile and for them to laugh was always icing on the cake. John was an avid reader who enjoyed reading history and also books about planes and trains. Both of John's parents had a special love for musical, and as a result, he too learned to develop a tremendous passion for music. John's favorite genre of music was Bluegrass, of which he enjoyed for many, many years. In 1992 John endured an auto accident which caused him to lose the ability to play. Even though he could no longer play, John continued enjoying Bluegrass, and would frequently encourage others to participate and play whenever they could. Family and friends of John will gather on Saturday evening, January 18 at 6:00 to celebrate his life at the Plaza Theater near the Garland Square.
