Obituary

Viola M. Varble This beautiful, energetic, loving lady took her last earthly breath the morning of September 4, 2023. Born in Ohio November 5, 1922, the youngest of 4 to Fairy and John Alkire. Her energy became focused when she started dance lessons at age 5. There her agility led to performances of ballet, tap and toe shoes with taps. In her teens her instructor took her to NYC to audition, just for the experience. At eighteen, she took the train to NYC and lived at the Rehearsal Club, a residence for young ladies who were auditioning or working as singers, actors or dancers. Her first job was a with dance troupe on the State Fair circuit and then she toured with the first USO tour in the states. Upon returning to the city she learned the Rockettes were auditioning for an "end" girl. Never to let her 5'4" stop her from trying, she was told she would just have to "kick" higher thus living her "dream" from 1942-46. In 1945, she married Henry C. Benzenberg, a Long Island Medical School student. They gave birth to Linda in 1947, and soon moved to Milford, PA, where "Doc" opened a private practice. Thereafter came son Craig and daughter Nancy. When Hank died suddenly in 1959, she and the children moved to Ohio to be closer to family. After working as a dental assistant, she opened a restaurant with her brother and mother. In 1965, she married Larry D. Varble, which added son Jack, to the family. After Larry died in 1981, she moved to St. Louis to live with Nancy and her 3 children. Upon Nancy's death in 2010, she moved to Santa Fe, NM to live with Linda and husband, Larry, delighting all who met her. In 2022, while visiting Craig and wife, Mary, in Plano, Texas, she experienced many falls and a rapid decline in health. Though she had some memory loss, she knew all of her family, who enjoyed their visits and happy phone conversations. She is survived by 3 children, 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren.
