Obituary

Growing up in Fort Worth, I thought that anything that happened in the Texas panhandle was of no importance to me. About the time that I was joining the Boy Scouts, a little dust devil spun up in Plainview, Texas on March 8, 1950 named Becky Annell Ashton. A mischievous little whirlwind but filled with love, respect and compassion for anyone caught in her winds. In her early years, she swirled her antics and love through Plainview, Floyada and Lockney. After graduating from Lockney High School and with a Miss Plainview title in hand, she blew onto the campus at Texas Tech. Whirlwinds tend to join forces at times and spring apart at other times. While at Texas Tech, Annell's whirlwind collided with another known as William E. (Bill) Campbell. They combined their winds and created three amazing children in Cori, David and Brian who in turn created grandchildren Lauren, Preston, Kylie, Jaden and one due in July. But that Campbell/Ashton whirlwind spun apart with Annell and Bill traveling in different directions. Annell, as a single mom dedicated her life to her children making sure they were grounded in her Christian faith, her work ethic, her respect for everyone she met but most of all in the love she spread to everyone who felt her winds. She successfully encouraged her children to complete their college educations and she put her approval on their choice of spouses: Jaye, Laura and Eren. She did all this while never losing her ability to enjoy and appreciate the fun things in life. She also was blessed with two older sisters, Pat and Karen. In 1989, I met Annell and was immediately caught up in her whirlwind as she swirled me into her life. We spent 25 years enjoying a love that could overcome any obstacle. A love based on total respect and trust. We enjoyed doing anything and everything together. We took many trips and had wonderful adventures which we referred to as To-Nell Adventures. She allowed me to share in her incredible zest for life. It was and still is an honor and privilege for me to be a part of her family and come to love her children and grandchildren as my own. Through our love, I became a better man, a better husband and a better Christian. As we celebrate her ascension into Heaven, please enjoy the enormous legacy of love that she leaves for us to share. To my Sweet Annell, only we know how complete our love was for each other. I will continue to be the man you helped me to become so that I can be sure of continuing our adventures in Heaven. I know that you chose the 31st so you could pretend all the celebrations and national fireworks were for you. I just pray that God will know how to handle you as you spin into his care.
