Austin's Old 300, Charlie was born in El Paso, Texas on April 12, 1934 to Thelma Mae and George Buford Winn. He was raised by his maternal grandparents Bessie and Tom Winn in Marfa, TX in the Big Bend and graduated from Marfa High School in 1951 in the last Texas Class to attend only 11 formal grades. He graduated from Sul Ross State University with a BBA in Accounting in 1955 and volunteered for the Army where he served in the Continental Army Command at Fort Monroe VA. After his honorable discharge, Charlie began his accounting career in Dallas working for Hunt Oil Company, Prudential Financial, Tennis International and Hanover Petroleum Company before forming his own CPA practice, Winn & Winn, with his wife Nancy in 1979. Charlie was proud to be a native Texan and was always ready to talk about his Marfa upbringing including his "career" at the old Palace Theatre and Marfa Drive-In where he met Elizabeth Taylor and the other stars of the movie Giant which was filmed in Marfa. He was an avid World War II buff whose stories always began with getting news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor over the family's old Zenith radio and ended with a memory of Marfa's German POW camp or a tie-in to his favorite WWII movie I Wanted Wings. Charlie is preceded in death by his grandparents, parents and sister, Georgia Mae Winn Wheeless. He leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Nancy Louise (Dennis) and their twin daughters Abigail Rose Niezgoda and her husband Brock of Houston and Hannah Lucy Wolfert and her husband Paul of Charlotte NC. After a final drive through his beloved Big Bend, interment with full military honors will be in Marfa.
Please don't be sad when I don't remember you. I will always love you. My heart will always remember even when my mind cannot.
