Alsup, James N.

July 30, 1946 –
 July 9, 2016

Obituary

When they were newlyweds living in Aurora, Colo., Lynn Alsup asked her husband if he loved her more than anyone else. “He said, ‘I’m not sure I’ll love you tomorrow, but I love Jesus first, then you, then my family,” said Lynn. She was a little irritated at the time, but after 49 years and 2 months of marriage her view has changed. “It was only because he loved Jesus that he could love me so well,” said Lynn. “It was actually a lovely thing for him to say. That was one of the things he taught me.” James Nelson Alsup died Saturday, July 9, 2016, at his home in Plano, Texas. He was 69. Mr. Alsup was born July 30, 1946, in Affton, Mo., to Jesse Howard and Pricie May Alsup. At the time, the family lived in a boxcar turned house provided by the railroad company where Mr. Alsup’s father worked. The 7th of 8 children, Mr. Alsup grew up in Barnhart, Mo., and attended Crystal City High School. He then attended the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. In Columbia, Mr. Alsup met Lynn Hefflinger. They were married on May 20, 1967. After serving in the United States Air Force at a NATO base in Germany, Mr. Alsup finished his bachelor’s degree in business at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. He joined the accounting firm Touche Ross (later Deloitte Touche) where he worked as an audit manager in Kansas City, Mo., and later Houston, Texas. In 1986, Mr. Alsup joined the oil and gas industry when he joined Primary Fuels, Inc., as the vice-president of finance. In 1990, he joined Hunt Oil to launch their office in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After his time at Hunt Oil, Mr. Alsup continued to work in the oil and gas industry with stints at Tazama Pipelines Limited in Zambia, and at Halliburton in Houston before he retired to his home in Plano. Mr. Alsup was a member at Hunter’s Glen Baptist Church where he taught children’s Sunday School for many years. He is survived by his wife, Lynn; their two children, James Nelson Alsup, Jr., and Sara Elizabeth Alsup; daughter-in-law, Nancy Alsup; granddaughter Margaret Paige Alsup; two sisters, Christine Dunn and Mary Sue Kraus, and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be interred at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. I worked at TR- Houston with Jim as my supervisor on an oil & gas audit we thought would never end. He was a good instructor and reinforced his lessons well. Many of his witticisms still recur to me, even influencing my continued CPA work. So, Jim, I didn’t know Number Day was almost five years ago, so I’m turning in my audit area late. But, I will never forget you and, though I may have often been an obdurate apprentice, I will always respect you.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
