Stirnweis, Craig M.
Obituary
STIRNWEIS, CRAIG MARDEN (GRUMPS) Craig Marden Stirnweis was born on August 28, 1946 in McMinnville, Oregon and passed away on July 31, 2016 in Dallas, Texas. Champion grandfather and avid racquetballer, tennis player and life time snow skier, Craig spent most of his young life in Boise, Idaho where he graduated from Borah High School and earned a degree from the University of Idaho. Craig’s professional career began as a National Bank Examiner for the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. He became Deputy Comptroller for Special Supervision – a unit tracking the performance and safety and soundness of the nation’s National Banks, and exercising special supervision for troubled banks. Recognizing his expertise, the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas added Craig to its executive team, assisting the savings and loan regulator at a time of crisis in the industry. Subsequently Craig was a consultant to banks and banking supervisors in the US, Europe, and Asia, working for the International Monetary Fund and KPMG with money center banks and foreign banks in both the U.S. and in their home countries. He also held executive positions with Sunbelt Savings and Barclays Capital. Having worked in virtually every area of the financial services industry, collecting many friends along the way, he retired in December 2012. During his professional life he was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel extensively gathering stories to share with his children who were most impressed when he had a chance meeting with Evil Kneevil. Craig’s career took him and his family to many memorable cities after Boise. He found time to coach his kid’s soccer teams and volunteer as the President of the Athletic Council while living in Crofton, Maryland. In Boston Craig walked his daughter to the bus stop every morning on his way to earn his Masters degree from Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. In Dallas he found an MG to restore with his son and a place to (eventually) retire. He loved his time spent living in New York City and DC as both cities gave him the opportunity to go on long walks and meet new people. In retirement Grumps, as he was called by his grandchildren, enjoyed volunteering at the Plano Senior Center, playing tennis at Canyon Creek Country Club, dining out but most especially accompanying any willing grandchild on a donut or frozen yogurt run. Preceded in death by his father Elden Stirnweis, his mother Marzene Stirnweis, and his daughter Sarah Stirnweis. Craig is survived by his sisters Sharene Martineweis and Tamara Stirnweis, daughter Amy Schumer, son Jonathan Stirnweis, favorite son in law Joseph Schumer, favorite daughter in law Heather Stirnweis, “Uncle Bill” Robertson and his amazing grandchildren, Nate, Jackson, Maxwell, Sammy, Katherine (aka Sprinkles) and Hailey. At this time there will be no public memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to Planned Parenthood in his memory. In honor of our very special Grumps whom we will miss with all of our hearts, please take a moment to raise a glass of good port with your most cherished family and friends, take the kids in your life for donuts and absolutely, positively, don’t vote for Donald Trump. Craig had begun a wonderful phase of his life, one that his children and grandchildren would have grown to appreciate even more than they did already.
Here’s to his journey and to all who seek peace on this planet.
While I haven’t talked with or seen Craig in awhile, I counted him as a friend, advisor, and great dinner partner. I fondly remember our time together at Barclays and later in some fine Midtown restaurants. Sincere condolences to the Stirnweis family.
Grumps will be missed.
Craig just glowed when he talked about his son, daughter and his grandchildren. He was so proud of all of you. I was a business colleague and highly respected him as a professional. As a friend, I enjoyed out not frequent enough dinners and talks. My sincere condolences on your loss. Remember the good times you had with him. He loved you very much.
My sincere condolences for your loss. I will miss knowing Craig is there for advice. He was the project for a Study I requested from KPMG when I became Chief Examiner at the Farm Credit Administration. Craig became a close confidante and a trusted colleague. His time with us will always be a fond memory. God Bless and keep you all.
I remember Craig as a friend, colleague and mentor during my time at Barclays in Miami. He did everything he could to make my time there productive and fun. He asked this Scotsman to learn Spanish which was interesting for everyone to watch. I am sure it was part of his great sense of humor. You meet a lot of people in your life journey and I know my life was richer for having had Craig in my life. I am a better person for all the things he did for me. My condolences to all of the family and especially his beloved grandchildren at this difficult time.
There aren’t enough words to describe what a wonderful person Craig was. His smile, his laughter and his great love for his family was so evident in all his fb postings. My thoughts & prayers go out to you all. He will be missed. God speed my friend.
Craig was wonderful father and grandfather to my daughter, her husband, Jonathon and their children. Words can never express the the extent of the loss that all who knew Craig will feel. God be with you all.
So sorry to hear of his passing! Just happened to Google his name since today would’ve been his birthday. I was Craig’s assistant at KPMG. He was a wonderful person. My sincerest condolences to the Stirnweis family.
