Obituary

John Patrick Shropshire June 23, 1953 – August 10, 2016

John Patrick Shropshire was born on June 23, 1953 in Dallas to James Edward Shropshire and Margaret Walker Shropshire.  He passed peacefully at his home in Rowlett on August 10, 2016. Pat was the middle brother of 5 boys, Jim, Tim, Pat, Mike and Steve.  It was a busy home filled with sports, games, laughter, and lots of mischief! Pat grew up in Richardson where he attended St. Monica Catholic School and Jesuit and then graduated from Richardson High School in 1972.  He played RSI football throughout elementary school, junior high and high school.  Pat served in the US Navy for 2 years and was stationed in the Florida Keys where his primary job was a dental technician. Pat married Judy Hostler and had two beautiful daughters, Katie Brooke Shropshire and Stacey Blair Shropshire, who were his pride and joy and light of his life.  He attended all Katie and Stacey’s school activities, including band, cheerleading and their many sports like softball, basketball, volleyball and soccer when they were growing up.  As they grew older, he enjoyed spending his spare time with them having cookouts, watching sports or attending Texas Rangers games together, taking vacations with them and trips to visit when they lived away from the Dallas area, or just sitting around enjoying their time with each other talking, laughing and telling stories. He loved his family dearly and especially enjoyed the many extended-family trips they took at Thanksgiving to Broken Bow, OK and Lake LBJ.  This was a family favorite time and there are so many memories and tall tales that came from those times together over the last 7 years.  Most of those memories were created around the camp fire and have been re-told many times to cheer everyone up. They will be told again many times in the years to come. Pat spent the majority of his career in apartment maintenance until joining one of his best friends, Joe Luther, to run a home remodeling business in 2007. He enjoyed building furniture and took pride in home improvement and fixing problems for people. Pat was known and loved for his quick wit, light-hearted sarcasm and never-ending one liners. Pat loved music, especially classic rock from the 70’s and could tell you who sang any song ever recorded. His knowledge of sports and music trivia was surprising and he could knock out a crossword puzzle in minutes. Pat loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, camping and reminiscing around the fire pit in the company of his many friends.  He hosted a weekly poker night at his house for the last 9 years which included many friends he has known since high school.  Pat cherished his many lifelong friendships and kept in touch with friends in order to maintain those friendships. Many have said that Pat had more best friends than anybody they knew! Pat loved and supported the Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavs and was a huge, unwavering fan of the Dallas Cowboys.  His man cave was a tribute to all the sports he loved. Pat was preceded in death by his mother and father and brother Tim.  Pat is survived by brother Jim Shropshire, his wife Camille and nephews Ethan and Brett Shropshire, brother Mike Shropshire, his wife Melanie and niece Kristen Shropshire and nephew David Shropshire, brother Steve Shropshire, daughter Katie Parks and her husband Nick and their children Aubrey and Nicholas, daughter Stacey Shropshire and fiancé Ryan Andrews, brother and sister-in-law Sam and Kathy Anderson, nephew Greg Anderson and his wife Amy Anderson and nephew Bradley Anderson, and mother-in-law Betty Hostler. Pat was over the moon excited about expecting his first grandson in early October, Jackson James Parks. A celebration of life memorial for Pat will be held on September 3rd, 2016 @ 2:00 pm at Aria Funeral Home. Aria is located at 19310 Preston Rd. Dallas, TX 75252. You truly were one of my favorite coworkers. When I moved away and heard you cried, I was so moved. That shows the kind of man you were… So strong and tough but a true softy when it came to your friends and family. Sometimes people come into your life and make such an impact. You are one of those people. I am proud to call you my friend and will never forget you. See you the second Tuesday of next week, Patty-cake.

I smiling and crying because Pat always made me laugh and now he is gone. We connected with each other while we were teenagers. He had a large family of brothers. I did too. He liked to sneak out of his moms house late at night. I did too. He liked Patty Lester. I did too. On and off, for these last 45 years, we would see each other. Pat could be described as scrappy, hard to stop, direct and sympathetic. An instigator, mediator and companion. He was a great friend to strangers and a greater friend to his family and friends. I will miss you Pat. We all will miss you. but we will never forget you. Keep that smile shinning.

One of the good guys gone too soon. “Daddy Pat” was a wonderful father to our girls. He always made us laugh even in the toughest of times. He was loved dearly and is missed but will live on forever in our hearts.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
