Simo, Joseph
Obituary
Joe Simo Jr, 64, of Plano, passed away on Sunday September 11, 2016, at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Plano, Texas. Born and raised in Raymondville, Joe spent his formative years travelling, camping, hunting, and fishing. He also showed an affinity for photography, and loved both reading and writing. Joe attended the University of Texas, graduating with a master’s degree in geology which led him to a lifelong career in the oil and gas industry. For the next 43 years he would remain a passionate student of geology and a dedicated advocate of the oil and gas industry as a whole. In 2012 Joe started his own oil & gas exploitation and geological consulting firm with a focus on using new methods to extract additional hydrocarbons from previously abandoned wells. His passion and high level of commitment to his work was only surpassed by his love of family. He is preceded in death by his parents Joe and Teresa Simo. Surviving his loss are his beloved wife Suzanne; daughter Katrina Micaela Leigh and husband Chance of Georgetown; son Andrew Joseph Simo of Georgetown; his step-daughter Joey Marshall of Grapevine and step-son Justin Marshall of Dallas; sister Nilda Frias and husband Juan of San Antonio; 3 grandchildren Carter, Madison and Cullen; and countless other family members and friends. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the staff at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital and LifeCare Hospital of Plano. A memorial service will be held in Austin on October 8 at 10am at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Another memorial service will be held in Dallas on October 15 at 11am at the Aria Funeral Home on Preston Road. Our deepest condolences to all of his family–Joe was not only our dear friend..but we shared many memories together– we shall cherish for the rest of our lives..We both came from the same small town of Raymondville..and our friendship was there always– he will be missed dearly–Thanks for the memories..brother..till we meet again– may you rest in peace..
Sorry for your loss. Even though we didn’t met personally, my Primo Joe and I were in contact thru e-mails always sharing our family pictures.
The Simo family will be in my prayers for many, many days to come. I wish that mere words were enough to help, but only time and God can give comfort and peace. So please know that I am in prayer for you. Marsha (Muff Hildebrandt) McComb.
My thoughts and prayers for your family. I worked with Joe at Enserch many years ago. He was a great Geologist and friend.
Joe became my mentor by default when I started with Enserch in 1980. We spent many a day together sitting on wells in Hardeman County, Texas when there was no such thing as the internet, fax machines or cell phones. Although Joe was a great teacher of wellsite geology, he probably taught me more about the card game euchre than drill breaks and oil shows. I received his hand me down, well used 1975 white ford torino company car shortly after I started and drove it while sitting on a telephone book until the day the transmission fell out on Greenville avenue. Those were good days; ones that I will always look back on fondly.
Many people may not know that Joe was one of the first advocates of horizontal drilling, long before the Barnett or Austin Chalk made it commonplace. He was always a step ahead it seemed.
I hope everyone who knew him remembers how much he loved geology and the oil business. I will surely miss him.
I worked with Joe so many years ago and he was always a faithful and dear friend. He will be missed.
