Obituary

Rosemarie “Rose” Ann (Sawler) Ham, 67, of Richardson, Texas passed away peacefully on November 8, 2016 with her loving husband, Steve, at her side following a bravely fought illness. Rose was born on January 24, 1949 in Staten Island, New York to William Sawler and Hannah Sawler Anthony.  Even as a teenager and young woman, Rose was responsible and thoughtful.  After the death of her Step-Father, Walter Anthony, she helped her Mother run the family business, Narrows Tavern, in Staten Island.   She was a graduate of Curtis High School in Staten Island.  Rose also graduated from nursing school in New York and, fitting to her kind soul and innate ability to care for others, she flourished as a nurse.  Rose was a woman of many interests and talents, including coaching and managing her women’s softball team and being an avid dancer; whose love of dancing led her to have the opportunity to dance in New York City, “way off Broadway”, as she humorously described it.  As a devoted Mother and wife, Rose raised her two children with love near many family and friends.  Her children recall how she would rub their temples to soothe them when they were upset and how she encouraged her son to overcome physical challenges with his foot and always try new things.  True to her nature to create new adventures in her life, she moved to Texas in the early 1990’s to enjoy the warmer climate and shift her career focus to property management of several apartment complexes.  It was in Texas that she met her love, Steve; marrying on April 24, 2004 and being completely devoted to each other ever since.  Rose and Steve brought immeasurable joy and love to each other’s lives and Rose was a true blessing to Steve’s family as well.  Even in the face of illness and adversity, Rose triumphed to maintain a spirit of joy, positivity, laughter, sense of humor, & tenacity.  She worked hard to battle the effects of multiple sclerosis and was deeply appreciative of her doctors, nurses, friends, and family that helped her do so.  As a wife, Mother, daughter, Grandmother, Aunt, sister, friend, and member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church; Rose loved each of these roles and blended them together gracefully.  She was especially proud of being a Grandmother to her grandson, Anthony, who always brought joy to her heart and a smile to her face.   As her daughter, Lee, describes, Rose “loved life” and all the experiences she created with it.  She loved her family and friends with a ferocious, unreserved devotion and with all of her heart.  Rose is already missed by her heartbroken family and friends, but will forever fly as an angel in their hearts and memories. Rose is survived by her husband, Steve Ham of Richardson, TX; her Mother, Hannah Anthony; her daughter, Lee Spratt; her son, Frank Spratt; her grandson, Anthony Spratt, all of Staten Island, NY; sister Elaine Rodrigues & husband Tito of Zephyr Hills, Fl and sister Connie Delassio & husband Guy of Staten Island, NY.  She is also survived by Mother-in-law, JoAnn Ham; sister-in-law Liz Dooley & husband Chris; sister-in-law Allison Birney & husband Nathan, all of Houston, TX; and numerous nieces, nephews, Aunts, Uncles, cousins, and friends. Friends and family are invited to a memorial celebration of Rose’s life on Saturday, November 19th at 11:00 am at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 1210 W. Belt Line Rd, Richardson, TX, 75080. Rose’s family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for the outpouring of prayers, care, sympathy, visits, and love given to Rose and her family by clergy, doctors, nurses, and numerous friends during this difficult time.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Rose Ham’s name may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Richardson, or the American Lung Association. Arrangements are under the direction of ARIA Cremation Service and Funeral Home 19310 Preston Road Dallas, Texas 75252 214-306-6700

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
