Paul Eugene “Buster” Alford was born to Annie Lois Mays and James Jefferson Alford on April 28, 1931 in Pickton, Texas. As a young child Paul moved with his family dozens of times around East Texas as they worked crops. Growing up he loved playing with his cousins, uncles, and friends in Pickton. While in school he discovered his love of sports. He enjoyed track and field, baseball, and especially playing basketball. After graduating from high school in Pickton, he attended Lon Morris Junior College and Stephen F. Austin on basketball scholarships. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in July of 1954 and was stationed in Germany. After completing his military service and returning to Texas a friend encouraged him to apply for a job at Chance Vought. He spent the next 30 plus years working at LTV. During that time he met and fell in love with Marge and her daughter Vi. He married Marge on October 17, 1959. A few years after being married their daughter Sandra was born. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved playing dominoes, working puzzles, and watching any type of sports on TV. He enjoyed traveling with his family and especially their trips to Las Vegas. Later in life Paul and Marge began visiting Winstar with their friends and family. He loved spending time his grandchildren and his cat Buddy.
He passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at his home in Grand Prairie surrounded by his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents Annie Lois Mays and James Jefferson Alford. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Marge Alford of Grand Prairie, TX; his daughters, Vi Belger of Kaufman, TX, Sandra Modlin and her husband Michael of Tyler, TX; his grandchildren, Dan Atkinson of Kaufman, TX, Michael Atkinson and his wife Juanita of Kaufman, TX, Alexa Modlin and his “Little Buddy” Tyler Modlin of Tyler, TX and his great granddaughter Taylor Atkinson of Kaufman, TX. He is also survived by his sister Annette Fletcher of Gladewater, TX, her daughter: Russann Dean and her husband Melvin Dean of Bullard, TX and their son, also her daughter: Renée Allen and her husband Larry Allen of Longview, TX and their daughters and granddaughters.
A visitation will be held on Monday, November 28, 2016 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm at the Aria Irving Chapel. A grave side service with full military honors will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, 200 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211.
