Obituary

John E. Masten died on January 9, 2017 of a sudden heart attack at the age of 89 in Plano, TX.  He was born in Avon, Indiana on February 27, 1927 and lived his life as a man of Christ. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Helen Masten; his son, Keith Masten of Plano (wife Deborah); daughter Theresa Howard of Cincinnati (husband Rick); 3 grandchildren, Jason, Ryan, and Erica Howard; and 3 great-grandchildren, Julius, Nadia, and Aryanna; 3 sisters, Doris Carlton (George), Lydia Gibbs (Chub) and Carol Vanlandingham (Roy); 1 brother, Joe Masten (Ruth) and a sister-in-law, Ramona Masten along with many nieces and nephews. John was a devoted and loving husband; a proud and caring Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. Helen and John were true partners, best friends and constant companions who shared the same passions for traveling and the outdoors. John and Helen traveled to Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Prague, and Budapest. They recently went to the Holy Land following in the footsteps of Jesus.  They also enjoyed hiking and have visited most of the U.S. National Parks. After graduating from Purdue with a B.S. in Agriculture, John worked briefly as an agriculture extension agent for Indiana’s Department of Agriculture. John’s love of farming lead him back to the farm. Early in their marriage, they farmed together for approximately 5-years before John’s back wouldn’t allow him to continue so he went back to Purdue and got his Master’s degree.  That was the beginning of a career which eventually lead him to the Farm Credit Administration working in offices in both Washington D.C. and Louisville, Ky. A visitation will be held at the Aria Funeral Home on Preston Road in Plano on Monday, January 16, 2017 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.  The funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at 2:00 at St. Andrews Methodist Church in Plano. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Andrews Methodist Church in Plano, TX. Condolences may be offered at www.ariacremation.com. Arrangements are under the direction of ARIA Cremation Service and Funeral Home 19310 Preston Road Dallas, Texas 75252 214-306-6700

    Helen,
Sandi and I were so privileged to be your across the aisle seat mates during our journey through the Holy Land. John had so many thoughtful questions for Neil that helped us have a better understanding of Israel. I extend to you and all your family a wish that you experience our sympathy on your loss.

I had the honor of working for John early in my Farm Credit Career and later with him at the Farm Credit Administration. I had the utmost respect for John and he taught me many valuable lessons, and I always knew he had my back. John was an excellent boss and mentor and a special friend, and I will miss him. As a co-worker has indicated to me, John will be missed but never forgotten. I know that speaks for the many of us who worked for or with him. Helen – Michelle and I have you and your family in our thoughts and prayers, always.

Helen- You will probably not remember me. I had the pleasure and honor of working with John at the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of Louisville in the 80’s as a credit review officer for Indiana. I remember John as one of the greatest bosses I ever worked for and with. He was kind, sincere, dedicated, and patient and always treated you like you were the only one he needed to be talking to at that time. He was certainly instrumental for me wanting to stay in the credit field. Marsha and I will always remember your kindness and hospitality at the Christmas party you and John hosted in the 80’s. We have you in our thoughts and prayers and may God bless you and your family during this difficult time.

While I’m not sure he knew it, I considered John my surrogate father. Along with all the other people he worked with or supervised, I always felt he was the ideal mentor, friend, and confidant. My fondest recollection is of him in bib overalls in the backyard of an immaculate home in northern Virginian. As the saying goes, “You can take the boy away from the farm, but never take the farm out of the man.” I always admired the close relationship between Helen and John. They made me feel welcome in their home, and were always interested in what was happening in my life. I loved John dearly.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
