Obituary

Jerrell “Jerry” Ralph Poindexter, D.D.S., 65, of Allen, Texas, passed away at home on Feb. 7, 2017.  Jerry, as he was better known by his vast network of family and friends, was born in Mathis, Texas, on Aug. 3, 1951. He was a 1969 graduate of Richardson High School. He graduated with honors from Texas A&M University in 1975 and was an honor graduate of The University of Texas College of Dental Surgery at San Antonio in 1980. He was a beloved and gentle dentist in Celina and Richardson, Texas, for 37 years. Jerry enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with friends and family. His greatest loves were spending time at the ranch in Nixon, Texas, and fishing the flats of Baffin Bay. He loved reading, solving crossword puzzles, and crafting custom fishing rods, which were truly works of art. An honest man, a loving son and brother, a caring uncle, a loyal friend, and a wonderful father and grandfather, Jerry will be greatly missed. He is survived by his children, daughter Jeana and husband Greg Bell of Little Elm, Texas; son Justin and wife Lori Poindexter of Carrollton, Texas; his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Ralph Poindexter of Richardson, Texas; sister Carol and husband Andy Parcel of Carrollton, Texas; sister Jane and husband Joe McManus of Katy, Texas; sister Joyce and husband Bill Anthony of Garland, Texas; brother John and wife Dana Poindexter of Richardson, Texas. He is also survived by five granddaughters plus one on the way and several aunts and uncles, cousins, and nieces and nephews from all over. A private family memorial will be held on Saturday, February 11th.  Please consider making a tax-deductible contribution in Jerry’s memory to the Coastal Conservation Association of Texas, 6919 Portwest Drive, #100, Houston, Texas 77024 or RodsForSoldiers.com. Jerry was more than just a dentist to me. I started going to Jerry when Ralph retired. With my growing up in Corpus, we shared many stories of the Coastal Bend. I am deeply saddened by his passing and will miss his kind and gentle nature.

Pam and I are deeply saddened by Jerry’s passing and we extend our sympathy and prayers to the family. Pam and I were Ralph’s patient’s since we moved to Richardson in the 1965 and then eventually with Jerry when he took over the practice. We enjoyed visiting with Jerry about his fishing the flats and he seemed truly interested in our adventures in growing roses and traveling to visit rose gardens
We considered Ralph a true fiend, we actually looked forward to “going to the dentist”! We will miss him immensely.

I started going to Jerry when he took over his father’s practice many, many years ago. He was so good natured and yes, very gentle and very honest. I knew I could trust him absolutely. I did look forward to my appointments with him because he was just such a pleasant person to be around, so thoughtful and kind. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to his family and friends. He will be missed very much.

Jerry wasn’t only our dentist but our friend. Even though we were miles away we could go to anyone else because of that. Every time we pass a Buckee’s we will think of him and smile. ❤

Glenn and I were so saddened when we heard of Jerry’s passing. We first met him when his family moved to Richardson and attended church with us. After Ralph retired we started seeing Jerry. He always spent time asking about our family and telling the latest adventures of his family. When I saw him a couple of weeks ago he was telling me about the new granddaughter they were expecting and about how all the family spent Christmas together. Such happy thoughts. We always had a nice conversation and thought of him as a friend as well as our dentist. He will be truly missed. Our prayers are sent for his family and all of his friends who loved him.

We were so sad to hear about Jerry. Like so many others posting here he’s treated our family since his father retired. He was so gentle with our children (now grown), and always had a few moments to talk about the farm and hunting. Our sympathy to the family.

I was very sad to learn of Jerry’s passing. We were buddies at Eastfield College and Texas A&M, and reconnected a few years back. The last time I saw Jerry we sat together at George Theilen’s funeral a year or so back. George was also at A&M. Jerry was a great friend and I will miss him. My condolences and I will be thinking of all his loved ones.

I was so very sad to see Jerry’s obituary in Sunday’s paper. Tears came immediately. Like so many others I started with his dad and continued with Jerry. Loved his fishing stories. He would just light up when he talked about it. I regret not being able to say goodbye, give him a big hug and tell him how much I appreciated him. He will be missed by all of us more than he could probably imagine. Linda and Joyce, my deepest condolences. No more “tap tap tap” to make sure that crown fit perfectly. God bless you Jerry.

I am very saddened by Jerry’s passing and was completely unexpected. Jerry had just put a crown on 2 weeks ago and I wish I could have spoken with him a little longer.I met Jerry while we both worked part time at Safeway from 1971-thru 73. We had good and funny times while working together. Jerry also graduated RHS the same year as my brother, who was also friends with Jerry. You will be missed my friend, but we’ll meet up again, that I’m sure of. My prayers to his family and those closest to him

I was so shocked and saddened to read of Jerry’s death. As a patient of his (and his father before him) Jerry became my friend, as well as dentist. Since go to Alaska frequently and have fished there, I would tease Jerry saying he had not really fished until he had fished in Alaska but Jerry always was loyal to fishing in the gulf. Please know I send my sympathy to all of the family.7418family

Our family is praying with you and for you! We were literally shocked & sadden when we heard the news of Jerry’s passing because my daughter Antequa and I had just had our annual check ups and she was due back to show Jerry, Joyce and Linda her teeth upon her braces being removed. In just a few days. Antequa and I have been patients since moving to Dallas. She was literally 4yrs old and now is 29. Dr. Jerry Poindexter will forever be who we call OUR FAMILY DENTIST. We love you Linda & Joyce and definitely is praying for the entire Family during this difficult time. May the LORD bless and Keep you always!

We were deeply saddened to hear about Jerry’s passing. He was such a kind and gentle man, a much beloved dentist. Although he only saw our 3 year old daughter once, he made such an impression on her! Tonight, as we read The Tooth Book, when it came to the picture of the dentist at the end, Ellesa smiled and said, “That’s Dr Jerry! He’s my favorite.”

Joyce, we are praying for you and for the rest of Jerry’s family. We pray that the Lord will give you comfort during this sad, hard time. We loved Jerry and we love you, Joyce!

I’m shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Poindexter. I started using Dr. Poindexter as my dentist in Feb of 1981. He was such a nice person and I looked forward to getting to talk to him during my bi-annual visits. Prayers for the family members during their time of grief.

Just learned of Jerry’s death through the Aggie Network. I haven’t seen him since 1975, but we were friends and colleagues through the common pre-med/pre-dent classes and the pre-med/pre-dent society at Texas A&M. After all these years I still remember him as kind and quiet, but dedicated to the study of science. I knew then that he would be a great dentist. I’m sad he is gone, but as a fellow Aggie, I will answer the Muster on Friday 4/21 when his name is called, “Here.”

I just found out of Jerry’s passing. I was the doctor that use to practice for 13 years next to Jerry’s office. He was a kind and gentle person. I had the honor to also see his father from time to time and his sister who worked in the office. You have my deepest sympathy. Jerry and his family will be in my prayers. My God bless all of you.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
