Our beloved Timothy Robert Stephen Vought, 76 of Savannah, Texas, went to be with his Lord on March 18, 2017. Tim had a voracious appetite for learning and growth. His diverse career and interests included the study and practice of martial arts, law enforcement, genealogy, hunting, fishing, cooking and camping. A true renaissance man, he faithfully served as Chalice Bearer and Licensed Lay Reader extending his lay ministry in both the secular and martial arts communities. He began his practice of martial arts in 1959 while a student at LSU. It was there Tim was introduced to a combination of karate and judo. In 1962, Tim moved to Texas and started a martial arts group at East Texas State University, traveling to Dallas on weekends to study judo. Ultimately, earning his Bachelors in Business from North Texas State University. In 1965, he began his training in Shorin Ryu Karate and Kempo under the guidance and expertise of Mr. Johnny Nash, Mr. Keith See and Mr. Ed Daniel. Eventually, Tim managed and owned dojos in the Dallas area teaching students of all ages. A member of the Dallas Police Department from 1970-1990, Officer Vought served on patrol and SWAT Team. He also developed and taught the department’s first comprehensive physical fitness and defensive tactics program for recruit officers. In 1972, Tim won the National Police Olympics Heavyweight Karate Championship. In 1974 he co-founded and was the first president of the Police Athletic Federation. In 1998, Dallas hosted the World Police Games with over 3600 contestants representing five nations. Grandmaster Vought served as Head Official for the Karate competition. Tim was awarded 10th degree Black Belt in Karate, 2nd degree Black Belt in Aikido, inducted into three Halls of Fame and served as an Emeritus member to the Board of Directors-American Karate Black Belt Association. He authored several books on firearm safety, personal protection and law enforcement training also achieving the highest rating as a Licensed Private Detective. Vought was selected for the FBI “Think Tank” on defensive training held at the FBI Academy in Quantico. Born in Houma, Louisiana he is preceded in death by his parents Frank Alonzo Vought, Sr and Ruby Simons Vought, brothers Frank Sr and Carl. Tim’s greatest loves were for his Lord and his family. He leaves behind those closest to him including his wife, Ilene of 27 years. His children, Daphne Vought Smith, Natalie Vought McGuire, Ashley Vought Chambers, Jill Osborne and Casey Osborne. As well as their grandchildren- Erica, Connor, Jacob, Carole, Chase, Bryn, Gemma, Cole, Kyle, Jess, Liam, Harrison, Brody and niece Kathy Vought Herbert who will all miss his teaching and engagement in their lives. Funeral services will be held April 8, 2 pm at Church of the Holy Communion. Interment will be at the columbarium on these grounds. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Tim’s name to Church of the Holy Communion. He leaves a void in the lives of those whom he impacted and influenced, well done good and faithful servant. Tim Vought was the type of Martial Artist, Police Officer, and Man, that we should all aspire to be.
Rest In Peace my friend. I am sorry I only found out about your passing this evening. I am going to miss our conversations and remembering the good old days. You were a great instructor and partner.
