Carl August Schleg, Jr, 89, of Garland, TX passed away on April 14, 2017 in Garland, TX. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm on Friday, April 21, 2017 in the Chapel of First United Methodist Church Richardson, 503 N. Central Expw., Richardson, TX 75080. Carl was born in Sheboygan, WI to Carl and Florence Schleg on June 21, 1927. He was the youngest of two children. He graduated from Cleveland High School in St. Louis in 1945. He was then drafted in to the Army Air Corp where he was stationed in San Diego until the end of World War II. At the end of the war he was stationed in Japan where he worked on B-25 Mitchell aircraft. After his time in the service he returned to St. Louis where he met the love of his life, Yvonne (Bonnie) Justus while at a church young adult fellowship meeting. They married November 28, 1953. They moved to New Orleans where he worked for Shell Oil Co. for 24 years as a cartographer. He was president for two years in the New Orleans Fencing Club part of the New Orleans Recreation Department and earned numerous awards. He was also a member of the Paul M. Schneidau Lodge #391, F. & A. M. serving as Master of the Lodge in 1967. He was a member of Metairie Evangelical and Reformed Church. But what he most enjoyed was spending his vacations every year camping and canoeing with his family, including building a canoe in his spare time. In 1973 he and his wife decided to leave the city behind and move to Eureka Springs, AR. It was his love for the outdoors and camping that brought them to Eureka Springs where he and the family built and ran Kettle Kampgrounds until the mid-1980’s when he retired. He was also a cast member of the Great Passion Play for 10 years and an active member of First Christian Church in Eureka Springs. He served in the Emmaus Community and various other church and mission activities. Finally in 2004 he moved to the Dallas TX area to be close to his daughter. He was a volunteer at Baylor Hospital, Plano for 10 years and he attended St. Andrew Methodist Church in Plano where he made many friends. I was blessed to know Carl. When he was was serious, he was deep. I will miss him.
Carl was a dear friend. He and Bonnie served the Emmaus community in northwest Arkansas for many years. Carl was a great prayer warrior for the community. My memories of Carl are precious to me.
John and I became instant friends with Carl when he joined St Andrew. We sat with him every Sunday. I (Gayla) Sat with him every Tues in Scotts Bible study class. We really enjoyed each other’s company. He had a great sense of humor. The entire Bible study class, of about 100, loved and laughed with Carl. We have missed him during his illness, now we will miss him forever. We all know he’s in heaven. He was a humble Christian and lived his life accordingly. You were lucky to have a father and grandfather like Carl. We will miss our friend, especially today, Easter Sunday. His seat will be empty. Good bless all of you!
Goodbye dear friend. May you rest in peace. You will be missed by all who met and loved you.
Martha, I worked with your father at Baylor Plano. And being a fellow Wisconsinite we often shared stories about the culture of Wisconsin–ie–bubblers, Sheboygan brats, etc However, I never knew he had such an interesting life beyond Wisconsin. You must be proud. Please accept my condolences. (You and I met at Baylor’s 5 year awards dinner; we sat at you and your dad’s table)
What a fun time walking into Baylor Hospital in Plano and seeing Carl at the concierge desk He always had a funny greeting or comment. He will be missed in our hearts and our lives. He is with Jesus who is holding him in his arms. He was always so brave. Jesus will tenderly hold the loved ones and will walk every step with us. Coleta Lewis
Deepest Sympathy to Carl Schleg’s family from a classmate in his deceased wife’s nursing class. God Bless!
What a joy it was working with Carl at the concierge desk at Baylor. We shared stories of New Orleans;retelling what we miss most about Mardi Gras- Pete Fountains”Half Fast Marching Band” and how much red beans and rice we could eat! On the wings of Angels Carl. We will miss you.
Carl was definitely one of a kind! I loved kidding and joking with him. He and had many friends at Baylor Plano!!!
I had the pleasure of being one of the many people who worked with Carl at Baylor. To say he was “one of a kind” is an understatement! I remember him always doing puzzles, and he was great at math. His mind was sharper than people more than half his age. He was quick witted and fun! The angels are rejoicing in the company of Mr. Carl Schleg,jr.
I’ve spent many pleasant hours with Carl & Bonnie thru the years. They got me started into the Emmaus community. The picture with his obituary is the way I will always remember him–with an expression on his face that you really don’t know is coming next from him…. but a humble, sweet man.
I always enjoyed Carl greeting me in the mornings as
On my way to my volunteer shift at Baylor for many years.
We are from the same era so our conversation related.
Blessings of comfort to all the family.
