Obituary

William Lawrence Wood (Bill) and Evelyn JoAnne Wood (JoAnne)

Bill was born October 8, 1927, to William A. and Nela Lawrence Wood in Miami, Florida. He passed away last year on September 17, 2016, in Carrollton, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents and son-in-law, Charles Bradley Carter. At JoAnne’s request, his services were postponed until her passing. JoAnne was born May 20, 1934, to Clarence Edward and Evelyn Violet Witt in Cumberland, Maryland. She passed away August 4, 2017, in Grapevine, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her spouse, and son-in law. Bill proudly served in the U.S. Navy, enlisting on October 6, 1945. Following discharge, he received his BSEE from the University of Florida, where he was a member of Delta Chi. He married JoAnne on June 7, 1952, the day after she graduated from high school. While living in Florida, they had 3 children, Debbi, Donna and David. A change in jobs for Bill resulted in a move to Richardson, Texas in 1967. Bill worked in the engineering profession until retirement. He also started a piano tuning company. He enjoyed singing in the choir at Arapaho United Methodist Church, where he also tuned the pipe organ and pianos. Bill was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in his 80’s and began to lose his ability to concentrate and work the word and jigsaw puzzles he loved. JoAnne spent many hours at the sewing machine making matching outfits for her daughters. She even made both of their wedding dresses in 1977. Other activities JoAnne loved were decorating the house and tree at Christmas time, reading, cooking and gardening. JoAnne retired from the Food Service, working for Richardson ISD as a cafeteria manager. She also held many offices on the RISD Food Service Board, including President. For a short while, she and Bill provided day care for their great grandson until her mobility became limited due to back pain issues. Bill and JoAnne were very loving and supportive of their family. They moved to an independent living apartment in Irving in 2015 due to health and safety issues. Bill fell last summer and broke his hip. Complications following surgery led to his death. JoAnne underwent emergency surgery about the same time and almost joined Bill in October. The surgeons and staff at Baylor Scott and White in Irving pulled her through her crisis, but she never was able to walk again. She missed Bill greatly and has finally joined him in eternal peace. Bill and JoAnne are survived by their three children and spouses, Debbi and Ken Morris, Donna Carter, David and Kim Wood, 7 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and one more due in November; and JoAnne’s two brothers, Clarence and Jim.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on September 29, 2017 at Rush Creek Christian Church, 2401 SW Green Oaks Blvd., Arlington, Texas, 76017. Graveside services will be at 2:15 on October 6, 2017 at DFW National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimer’s Association and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.   Arrangements are under the direction of: ARIA Cremation Service & Funeral Home 19310 Preston Road, Dallas, Texas 75252 214-306-6700

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
