Nelson, Robert A.
Obituary
Robert Allen Nelson, of Flower Mound, Texas, passed away on December 11, 2017 at the age of 79 years. He was born to Manville Nelson and Alice Marshall Nelson on January 2, 1938 in Malta, Montana where he was raised with his sister, Patricia. He graduated from Malta High School before going on to attend Concordia College in Minnesota and then on to receive a master’s degree from Seattle University. Robert dedicated 31 years to working in High School Education, a career which he loved and always took every opportunity to make a positive impact in student’s lives. He worked at Garfield, Nathan Hale, Thomas Jefferson, and Federal Way High School before retiring in 1991. Robert then went on to be a founding co-owner of Technology Express until 2011 when he moved to Flower Mound, Texas. Robert had the supreme ability to make instant friends; connecting in a way that made everyone feel genuinely special. He loved to travel and spend time with his family, he enjoyed a round of golf or a game of tennis with friends, and he didn’t consider the day complete without getting his 10,000 steps done. A shining example of a life well lived; Robert was a loving husband, father, grandpa, big papa, father figure, and friend. Although dearly missed, his memory will bring a smile to many. Robert Allen Nelson is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Turid Tharaldsen Nelson, children; Mark (Maryann) & Cami (Alan), grandchildren; Tyler, Angelo, Cailan, Jason, Josh & Erik, great-grandchildren; Mason, Mya, Aleigh, and Emma, as well as extended family and beloved friends. Robert was a great friend who I got to know first in 2000 when visiting from England with my late wife Barbara. Always smiling and generous we shared precious times. His devotion to Turid and family was so great and his enthusiasm completely captivating. All my blessings to Turid and his family, Michael
I had the extreme fortune to have been a student of Mr. Nelson at Thomas Jefferson- this is a sad day for a man who added to everyone he encountered. His value to all of us escapes words, they’re insufficient. May he find gods peace and blessings- he will never be forgotten!
Hello Family of Mr. Nelson:
I was a student at Thomas Jefferson high school, graduating in 1980. I held student body office, and therefore had the privilege to work closely with Mr. Nelson. He was wonderful in every way: sensitive, caring, kind, nurturing, proud of me. He also had a wonderful sense of humor.
He touched countless students over his years, but none more than me.
Yours,
Russell Hancock
Mr. Nelson left a profound impact on my life and that of many of my friends while at Thomas Jefferson HS. As a member of the ASB student leadership, he took an interest in developing student leaders, providing excellent direction and mentorship but always including fun. He had an innate ability to maintain a professional student-principal relationship but at the same time communicate a profound sense of frienship and good will. Love the man!
Mr. Nelson…he will always be “Mr. Nelson” to his former students…left a remarkable legacy at Thomas Jefferson High School (“TJ”). As student in the Federal Way School district starting in 1972 (Mark Twain, Camelot, and then Kilo) and graduating from TJ in 1980, I was among thousands who knew all too well the words “recession,” “unemployment,” “gas shortages”, “school levy,” “lack of funds,” and all that this bears on the responsibilities of a high school executive. At the time, I could hardly imagine the challenges faced by Mr. Nelson. Indeed, as I look back, as an administrator of higher ed myself, I marvel at how Mr. Nelson helped shape a culture at TJ where students, mostly of modest means, could launch themselves into the world happy and confident about their future. What ever the forces off campus, regional-national-global, at TJ, on campus, I always felt safe, supported, challenged, and well led. My years at TJ were formative and extraordinary. I thank Mr. Nelson for helping to make that experience memorable and valuable. Mr. Nelson served others and made a difference; his was a life well lived.
Wonderful privilege of knowing he and his wife Turid ,I cooked dinner at my home and remember his enjoyment when he was comfortable enough to put his feet up on the coffee table..I knew he felt welcomed to our home.
