Murphy, Ruth Milller
Obituary
Ruth Miller Murphy, 94, of Lewisville, Texas, formerly of Ponte Vedra, Florida, and Spring Lake, New Jersey, died Wednesday, November 21, 2018, in Plano, Texas. Mrs. Murphy, the former Ruth Wilcox Miller, was born at home in Spring Lake, New Jersey, on October 25, 1924, a daughter of Herbert Jasper and Madeleine (Morris) Miller. She grew up on the Jersey Shore during the Great Depression, graduating from Spring Lake Elementary School in 1938 and Asbury Park High School in 1942. Early in World War II, Mrs. Murphy helped with the Red Cross. During that time she met Robert E. Murphy, a U.S. Navy sailor stationed in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He would later become her husband. Mrs. Murphy also was admitted to the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps and studied nursing at Ann May School of Nursing in Neptune, New Jersey. She was among those being trained to help fill the gap left by nurses entering the armed services. Bob and Ruth Murphy were married on June 29, 1946, at St. Andrew’s Methodist Church in Spring Lake and this year celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary. They lived in Spring Lake for 50 years. In 1996 they moved full-time to Ponte Vedra and lived at Sawgrass Country Club until 2006. They then moved to Lewisville, Texas. Mrs. Murphy was a former elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Manasquan, New Jersey. She also attended St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Spring Lake, Palms Presbyterian Church in Ponte Vedra, and St. Andrew United Methodist Church in Plano. She was a long-time member of P.E.O., the Philanthropic Educational Organization. About 10 years ago, as she thought about her life, Mrs. Murphy said, “I like to think that there are four Fs that make us what we are: faith, family, friends, and fun.” Ruth Murphy is survived by her husband, Robert; three sons: Robert Jr. and wife Esther, Dennis and wife Marjorie, and Theodore and wife Elaine; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Herbert Jr.; and a sister, Jane Goodspeed. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the P.E.O.
