Davis, Charles Lawrence

April 2, 1939 –
 June 7, 2019

Obituary

Charles (Charlie) Lawrence Davis departed this life on June 7, 2019, having reached  eighty years of age.  Charlie lived in Carrollton, Texas at the time of his death and lived most of his life in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, including Arlington, Flower Mound, Weatherford, and Fort Worth. Charlie was born April 2, 1939, the first child of Charles Whatley Davis and Lucie Elizabeth Davis [née Smith] in Brownwood, Texas. His parents pre-deceased him. Death for Charlie attributes to complications related to the genetic disease Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency.  Despite the disease, he lived a full and active life and enjoyed a wide circle of friends. He married Teri Mancil [née Theresa Margaret Ann Howard] August 25, 1979 in Fort Worth, Texas.  Charlie is survived by his wife Teri Davis, his stepson Anthony [Tony] Thomas Mancil, his son Kevan Maxwell Davis, his grandson Asher Quinn Davis, his only sibling Richard Dennis Davis, and many other family members. Charlie attended the University of Oklahoma with studies in physics and had a career in engineering.  He retired from Abbott Laboratories, Diagnostics Division, after successfully providing five U.S. patents for inventions for the company. Military experience for Charlie was a short career in the U.S. Army during the period between U.S. involvement in Korea and Vietnam. Travels in his life included trips to England and Japan for business purposes, family travels to Thailand and other locations in Asia and the Pacific as well as points in Canada, Mexico and islands in the Caribbean.  State-side travels were widespread from coast to coast as part of his extensive involvement and leadership within the Porsche Club of America. Hobbies for Charlie included snow skiing, sports car activities, and photography.  His expertise in driving Porsches and handling a camera were affirmed by his serving as a well-appreciated instructor in both fields.  Due to his illness, snow skiing activities ended in 2002 with the Salt Lake City Paralympics, where his niece Muffy Davis medaled in downhill skiing.  The altitude became intolerable.  As his health deteriorated, participation in driving events were curtailed, but he enjoyed photography his whole life.   Please leave the family condolences and share memories in this website.

Charlie was a great leader and perfectionist. He always took the groups in which he was a part to the next highest level. There will never be another like Charlie. Sorely missed.

I worked with Charlie at REI and really liked him. I was the engineering secretary at the time. We old ex-REIers are like family. I’m sorry for your loss but know he was well liked and will be remembered by many.

When I first met Charlie almost 40 years ago, I knew immediately that he was one of the people I wanted to be like when I grew up. His ability to think outside the box gave him some great ideas, and it showed in his creative photography. His knowledge of Porsches and the Porsche Club was far-ranging, and he had some great stories to tell about both. He will be missed by so many people!

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
