October 1, 1935 - August 7, 2019
Barbara “Bobbi” Scoggin was born on October 1, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio, the second child of Francisco Silverio Piedad and Shirley (Stefania) Mas Piedad . She grew up in Ohio and Michigan and attended Dearborn High School where she was a Varsity Cheerleader and excelled academically.
Following her graduation in 1952, Bobbi earned several coveted scholarships for excellence in Mathematics, including the prestigious Ford Motor Scholarship. She pursued her degree at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Sorority and was a Tau Kappa Epsilon sweetheart.
While attending Bryn Mawr College, Bobbi met her future husband, Gerald Travis Scoggin, a handsome Lieutenant in the Army, on a blind date. They were married on June 8, 1956, exactly a year after their first date. They were soon blessed with four children in quick succession.
In 1967 the Scoggin Family relocated to Texas where Bobbi poured her energy into caring for her family. As an active member of The Church of the Transfiguration and Women’s Guild she put her considerable sewing and needlepoint skills to work hand stitching several sets of kneelers for the church sacristy. She was also a dedicated docent guiding tours of the church Labyrinth. Bobbi wore many hats including Troop Leader, Red Cross swim instructor, as well as Driver, Critic and Cheerleader for all of her children’s many sporting and dance endeavors. She was an active weight lifter and body builder, and pursued her passion for photography while raising her four children.
After the untimely passing of her husband in 1985 following a lengthy battle with Cancer, Bobbi immediately returned to school enrolling at Southern Methodist University while also working full time for Vick’s Health Care. In 1986 she received a degree as a Paralegal graduating with honors. She pursued a challenging career working with the Law Offices of Collins and Associates, eventually retiring in 2005.
After a lifetime of health and fitness, in 2010 Bobbi was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and fought a brave battle against the disease. In July of 2011 she suffered a rare adverse reaction to her treatment and went into severe Respiratory Failure. This led to a rapid decline in her health. She defied her doctor’s prognosis that she would succumb to Interstitial Lung Disease within two years and surprised everyone by surviving 8 years longer.
Bobbi passed away on August 7, 2019 peacefully with her family by her side. She will be remembered for her humor, quick wit, sharp intellect, passion for a good debate, wisdom, stubborn tenacity, unwavering Faith, and a fierce love for her family.
Bobbi is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Frank S. Piedad, husband, Gerald T. Scoggin, and infant son, Jon Edward Scoggin. She is survived by her children, Jeff Scoggin (Deborah Byrd), Andrea Scoggin Leininger (Bruce), Jennifer Scoggin Cowin (Greg), and Becky Scoggin Kyle (Derald). She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Eric, Valerie, Andrea, Gregory, Hunter, Kathryn, James and Ainsley, numerous lifelong friends and loved ones, and her beloved cats, Sam and Dave. She will be loved and missed every day until we are once again reunited by our Heavenly Father.
