Bowers, Helen V.
Obituary
Helen Victoria Bowers, 91 years old, died July 9, 2013, in the home of her daughter in Dallas, Texas. After more than 15 years as a certified alcohol counselor, she retired from ProvidenceHospital in Southfield, Michigan in 1985. She filled her retirement years with travel with her family, season opera tickets, writing poetry (a number were published over the years), intricate embroidery work, ruminating over crossword puzzles and reading an eclectic variety of books. She never stopped studying and learning, putting her computer to good use. Over the years, she was the loving owner of several rescue dogs including Vinnie, Lucky, Maggie the Beagle and Snuggles who she dutifully walked each day until a fall in 2010 forced her to use a walker. Helen was born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, on August 20, 1921, to Victor Walter and Sophie Lucille (Hnatyk) Niebzdoski while her father was serving in the U.S. Army. Her family subsequently moved back to Michigan where Helen attended PershingHigh School in Detroit and, after her children were grown, received her B.A. degree from WayneStateUniversity in Detroit. Helen lived and made lasting friendships in Southfield and Berkley, Michigan; New York City, Columbus, Ohio, and Holland, Michigan before residing in Dallas near her daughter’s family. Helen is survived by her two brothers in Michigan, Walter Niebroski of Clinton Township and Fred Nebroski of Berkley, and in Dallas, Texas, her daughter and husband, Helaine and Mike Nelson, her granddaughter and husband, Lindsey and Wes Simmons and her soon to be born great-granddaughter, Clarissa. She was preceded in death by her daughter Karen Lee Bowers of New York City and Carsonville, Michigan, who died December 2011. If you wish to honor Helen’s life, she would have loved for you to make a donation to the Sanilac County Humane Society, P.O. Box 27, Carsonville, MI48419 (a no-kill shelter). Arrangements are under the direction of ARIA Cremation Service and Funeral Home 19310 Preston Road, Dallas, Texas 75252, 214-306-6700.
