Obituary

Sally lived a life of smiles. Wherever she went, leaving a new smile behind. Her faith in the Lord, her children and very large extended family carried her through good times and bad. She spent her life caring for others leaving her own concerns behind, while always looking out for those many people she held so dear. Friends, family, and strangers, all felt the warmth of Sally’s embrace. Her love for her late husband Bud held her in her final days and hours, knowing she would be united with him again. Her joys were her children, godchildren, friends, St. Luke’s church, her home filled with Laura Ashley interiors and teddy bears, her garden, and Dallas Stars hockey. She gave all of her heart to so many until she had no more to give and the Lord called her home to be with him in eternal peace. She was proceeded in death by her beloved husband Capt. Bud Duernberger, step-son Don Duernberger, foster son Kevin Linscott, and parents Emil and Helen Besedick. Carrying on her legacy are son Kevin Paul and daughter in-law Melanie Lunsford, Denver, Co., son Christopher Paul, Dallas, TX., adopted son-in law and daughter Scott and Julie Macduff, godchildren Jared and Carolyn Macduff, Dallas, TX., brother and sister-in law Michael and Beverly Besedick, niece Kelly Besedick, nephew Blaine Besedick, Albuquerque, NM. Memorial service arrangements are pending, to take place at St. Luke’s in Dallas. Donations may be made in her name to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 5923 Royal Ln, Dallas, TX 75230. May her memory be eternal! I love you Mom.

Sally lived a wonderful life, full of friends and loved ones and smiles! She had such a gift of making everyone feel welcome! I was blessed to know the woman many of us affectionately called Aunt Sally and I know you are safe in God’s arms and back with Captain again.

We love you and we’ll miss you ‘Aunt’ Sally.

Sally was always welcoming. Even at her meticulously planned and decorated holiday dinners, people were welcome to be themselves. Nothing was forced. She was very much a mother figure, a good and faithful servant of her church, and a lady most certainly, but she also loved yelling at hockey and gritty murder mysteries. She was a writer and a gardener, expressing herself through her words and cultivating her quiet plants. She loved England and Europe and traveled all over with her family thanks to her pilot husband, who we knew as Captain, but she was also a homebody who had an extensive knowledge of interior decor and enjoyed using it to make her home just so. Sally was a character and a woman of character. She will be dearly missed.

I am very saddened to learn of Sally’s death. I am a friend from St. Luke’s and St. Claire’s Guild. She was a special member of our group, and we will miss Sally very much.

Sally was one my favorite neighbors… ever. She was warm and inviting, always with a smile. She happily welcomed people into her life, and it was a great joy to know her. I will forever take credit for inviting her to St. Luke’s, where she became a much more active member than I ever was. She loved her church home and they loved her, and for that I am thankful.

I loved having Sally as my backdoor neighbor because we saw each other almost daily in our driveways or when she was in her beloved garden – which was often. She was such a force that it is hard for me to believe she is gone from this earth. I’m glad we shared time while our lives overlapped. I’ll lift a cuppa tea and toast her memory!

Sally was the most compassionate, caring of friends. She always made holidays so special for those of us who no longer had families to join for celebrations. She remembered all special dates in our lives and reached out to make sure we were remembered. Sally had a huge heart, so many artistic and homemaking talents. She was a great mother and an always-caring friend. How greatly she will be missed from this Earth and so welcomed in Heaven.

I have so many fond memories of Sally throughout my childhood in Dallas. She was a long time friend and co worker of my mother Emily Dick. I grew up calling her Aunt Sally and have countless memories of her. She added extra civility and grace to me in formative years. She knew how to keep a beautiful home and conduct herself with formality and etiquette whilst being able to laugh and have a good time. Every year she would take me to Nordstrom to get me a new pair of shoes (she was a lover of shoes) and my first pair of Dr. Martens, my first 3 pairs, in fact, came courtesy of Sally. One pair I still wear to this day. She taught me how to prepare food, to entertain, to garden flowers and vegetables and to be a lady in many ways. Although today I have a few rough edges, many of the things I learned from her are what makes me able to conduct myself with poise to this day. I remember she and Bud returning from travels to England with the obligatory bottle of Stroh Rum for my parents and making clove oranges during Christmas for scented decorations. She never had to be all that she was for me and to me. As a child you just accept what is around you and who. In my older age I realize she went so above and beyond, treating me as if I were hers, in some way. A child, a neice, a member of a tribe. She spoke to me, not as a child but as a person, and always treated me with love, kindness and respect. She also encouraged me to keep “believeing” in Santa even as I got older and a theme of gifts was often “Just believe”. Perhaps what she was telling me was a greater lesson than that. Santa is only arepresentation of a larger idea. Believe in magic, believe in something bigger than yourself, believe in others. Believe that good things happen and that justice, good and right prevail in the end. Although it is so sad she isn’t still with us physically her legacy lives on in the lives of all those who knew and loved her. All of my love and condolences to her family, her children and friends. She will be sorely missed and forever loved.

    Erin

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
