Obituary

James R. Edens was born July 24, 1963.  He was a resident of Irving, Texas.  He enjoyed windsurfing, sailing, music, and his family.  In 1981, he graduated from Irving High School.  He then earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting at the University of North Texas.  James had a wonderful sense of humor and music was his soul.  In his youth, James played the drums in his garage bands.  Throughout his life some could say he was a nerd. He loved to tinker with amateur electronics, watch science fiction TV and fly homemade model rockets. He shared these activities with his three children. James is survived by his mother Elizabeth Edens, brother John Edens, son Jared Surratt, daughter Jessica Surratt, daughter Mikayla Edens and grandson Logan Surratt. Services to be held at Aria Crematory and Funeral Home, Wednesday, June 17, 2020. Viewing will be held from 4-6pm and the service will immediately follow. Loved by many, James will live in the hearts of them all.

James was a big part of my life through High School as the drummer of our band. Great guy. Wish we could have stayed connected.

So very sorry for your loss. May the Lord be with you. I was in my first band with James. That was the best summer of my youth. I have never forgotten that summer and group of friends.

James has left us all too soon. Every time I wear the neon t-shirt he gave me last Christmas, I’ll remember and miss him.

I was just informed today and am sad to hear this. I knew James since he was 8 years old. Later in life, James and I were together 10 years in the mid-1980s to mid-1990s. He definitely loved his drums and Rush was his favorite band. He also loved to sing and had a pretty good voice. He even entered a singing contest at the Mall and won 2nd place! We spent many hours at the lake wind-surfing and sailing his dad’s yacht…he really knew his way around that craft. I remember how excited he was when Paige told him he was going to be a father! He was a brainiac in some ways and a goofball in others. He had a great sense of humor and tried hard to be kind to everyone. My condolences to his family. May he rest in peace.

James was such a good guy. We had been friends since 3d grade. He played drums for the Omegas (which weren’t a real band) and was always up for having a good time. I talk about him often and will continue to do so. He was stolen from us too soon.

I just found out about this. Condolences to his family. I haven’t seen him in years, but often thought about him. RIP James. Heaven has a new drummer.

James lived up the street from me behind the mall. I remember waiting for the school bus and noticed he had drumsticks in his back pockets. I said Hey we should start a band! We had Dwain Keith Young on bass, Robert Fuentes on rhythm guitar, me on lead and James holding the groove on drums. He practiced relentlessly playing along to his favorite Rush songs. It wasn’t long before he had an awesome drum set befitting his abilities! Keith got a Rickenbacker bass like Geddy’s, Robert got a brand new Peavey T-60 and I got my ’76 Sunburst Gibson Les Paul and our amps were bigger. Lol. I feel bad for our neighbors, but those days in that garage were probably the happiest days of my life. God bless his mom for being SO patient, understanding and supportive of all of us. And God bless Robert’s mom fir picking us up at the Texaxas Jam at 3am in her little Honda. James was a great drummer, great band ate and even better friend.

I am so very sorry to hear that Jamie has passed, he was far too young. My deepest condolences to his mom, brother, children, and remainin family. He was a gentleman, thoughtful of others, and made me laugh constantly. His soul will be missed by many.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
