Obituary

Susan Katherine Terrell Potter, BA, MLS, JD Susan passed suddenly Friday, August 7th, 2020. Born August 13, 1949, in Stillwater, Oklahoma, to her parents George Edmond “Ed” Terrell, Jr., and Billie Howard Terrell. Susan graduated from Kirkwood High School, Kirkwood, Missouri. She received a BA, Cum Laude, in History from Southwest Missouri State University (now MSU), a Master of Library Science from North Texas State University (now UNT), a Juris Doctor from Baylor University (Honors List, Law Review), and Teacher Certification (focus in Special Education) from ACT. Survived by her husband of 34 years (August 12th), Glen, her son Will, her nephew Marcus (Chicago), her brother George Edmond Terrell, III, (Athens), and many loving and much-loved nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by her parents Ed and Billie. She was a Baptist at heart, in spirit … and in music, but she also loved attending St. Andrew UMC, Plano, the friendships and fellowship she had there … yet she would occasionally have to go home and listen to Tennessee Ernie Ford. Along with Ernie Ford, she loved The Statler Brothers, Mamas & Papas, The Gatlin Brothers, The Village People, and loved listening to the “March of the Day” on the classical radio station in her car before school with a donut or biscuit, and Diet Coke watching the ducks at a city pond. She was a voracious (and scary-fast) reader across many genres (classic British mysteries mostly, but also true-crime books which she also watched a lot on the ID Channel). Susan worked at Texas State Technical Institute (now TSTC), Waco; Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. Houston, as an Attorney and later as a Business Manager; AT&T in Parsippany, New Jersey; as an attorney in a private practice in Gun Barrel City, Texas, and later as Assistant District Attorney and Assistant County Attorney for Henderson County, Texas; and DeSoto Public Library, DeSoto, Texas, as the Young People’s Librarian. From 2006 to present, Dr. Potter taught at Creekview High School in Carrollton, Texas, in the Special Education department, though she was also a Substitute Teacher and a Teacher’s Aide in CFBISD several years prior to that. She was also the Head Coach for the school Bowling team for two years, and later, a Coach for school UIL Spelling Team for three years. She also assisted in Debate and district Law Academy Mock Trial prep and judging. She loved God and Jesus, her family and friends, traveling, and teaching her students whether they were actually in her official school classes, or anyone who needed her extra-curricular life-skills instruction. With the current Covid situation she would not want anyone risking their health, so there will not immediately be any in-person service. The family may try to do something virtual with a small group of family and friends.

My heart broke when I heard of Dr. Potters passing. She and I shared many conversations over the years at Creekview. We always had a laugh. My favorite of hers, is the time she found a grasshopper in her car! I will miss her sweet smile and our laughs. My deep condolences to Glenn & Will.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
