Obituary
Betty Sue (Swafford) Winfree, age 75, went to meet our Lord on August 28, 2020 Betty was born in Dallas, Texas on January 6, 1945. On her life’s journey she lived in Dallas, Waco, TX, Houston, TX, Chapel Hill, NC, Edmond, OK, Norman, OK and finally Richardson, TX. While Betty served in several administrative capacities, including Administrative Assistant to the Dean of Duke Medical School, her first love was teaching. She taught for 23 years, most of which was at William B. Travis Vanguard and Academy in DISD. Her students (5th and 6th grade) were introduced to Shakespeare, Russian Culture, and many extras in addition to learning the basics of language arts and social studies. Betty may still hold the record of 91% of her students scoring in the exemplary range on standard tests. (100% passed) Her students frequently thanked her for providing them with tools that they used as they advanced to higher grades. Betty is survived by her husband of almost 55 years, Derwood K. Winfree, her son Colin Winfree of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma , her daughter Anne of California, Brother Jerry Swafford of Oak Point, Texas, 5 grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great, great nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her mother, Essie Swafford, father Clint Swafford, Aunt Mamie Dockery, Sisters, Helen Bledsoe, Jean Cunningham and Joanne Swafford and brother Alan Swafford. Betty will be interred in the columbarium at St. Andrew United Methodist Church, Plano, TX. A memorial service will be scheduled for a later date due to Covid-19. That date will be announced when it can be scheduled.

My Aunt Sue was a lovely woman of the highest integrity. She was always gracious and loving. She was faithful to her Family and always made them the highest priority in her life. I miss her kindness and delightfull sense of humor.
