Mr. Black was my band director last year. He taught me a lot and he will be missed.
Mr Black was an important part of my son’s high school experience. He was a joyful person to be around when I volunteered with the band. He has been missed this year, but we wished him well in his new endeavors. We pray for peace to his soul and to his family also.
I was a student in Philips band for 2 years. Those past 2 years were the best years of band I have ever experienced. Philip was my role model because of how spirited, caring, genuine and supportive Philip was. Whenever I didn’t have the confidence and didn’t believe in myself I always knew I could do it because Philip would push me to do my best and tell me everything would be okay. He would always know when I needed help and knew exactly what I needed and how to help me. I would always talk to him about life and we would tell stories about things that never failed to bring a smile to our faces. I would always mess with Philip by untying his shoes and he would always laugh and say “im gonna kick you in your teeth Holgado”. I remember last year at Area I told him I didn’t think I had the nerves to get through the show and he told me I worked hard for it and he knew I put in too much effort to not perform to the best of my abilities. The thing he didn’t know was that he was the reason I was able to push myself to go the extra mile while keeping a positive attitude. He taught me to try my best and put my heart into everything I love. Philip was my teacher, my friend and my family. I made sure that when I learned that Philip resigned I told him how much he impacted my life and how amazing of a person he was. He told me I was a gift from God when I was a student of his, but it was the other way around. He was the best mentor I could have ever had. He forever impacted and shaped my life and I am forever grateful. My love goes out to his family and everyone who got lucky enough to meet Philip.❤️
Mr. Black was a huge inspiration in my life. He helped me work to get into drum corp in the summer of my junior year. He spent time with me working on the music and getting better at trumpet. My senior year of high school, my great grandfather passed away. He served in the Navy and we were having a military funeral for him. They were going to have taps play over a CD. So I asked if I could play. Mr. Black helped me learn taps for a military funeral. He helped me gain confidence to play in front of people and learn to love playing trumpet. I graduated in 2019. I still talk about all these crazy stories with him during marching band or jazz band. He worked so hard for us to get better. I hope he can rest easy now. But keep on playing Mr. Black.
Though Mr. Black was in my life a short time, he brightened up my life so much. He was our student teacher at SMS and he brightened my band mates and Is lives immensely. He made band and our sectionals so much fun and it was such and privilege seeing him at all region last year. He will truly be missed <3
I remember one time my friend madison romberger and i were trying to figure out a way for her to be able to go to a 21 pilots concert on the night of a football game, so naturally, we went to mr. black. we told him that her dad wouldn’t let her go to the concert until she tells a band director, and as soon as we told mr. black, he looked at madi with a concerned face.”i think you’re coming down with something. you shouldn’t attend this weeks game.” after saying that, we all laughed. 21 pilots was just an unmissable concert according to him. i’ll never forget how much he made us smile, and i hope he is at peace now. love you forever mr. black <3
Mr. Black, thank you for all you’ve done. You’ve changed the lives of so many people and you deserve everything the world can give. Im sending all of my prayers to you and your family. Thank you for giving us a light that shined like his.
I didn’t know Mr. Black very well, but the times I interacted with him he was always so kind and helpful. He will be missed greatly, and he has so many people that will remember him. Rest in peace
Philip, or as I knew him, Mr.Black was easily the best band director, teacher, and mentor I’ve ever had. He changed my outlook on band and life around it, he inspired me to be the best versions of myself, and he provided nothing but positivity to the people around him. If I could go back in time I would tell Philip how much I and many others around him loved and cared for him. Philip was such an amazing man and we know he’s in a better place now. May he Rest In Peace.
Mr. Black was as close to a second father as you could get for me. He was one of the first people to really care about me when I moved up to high school and I could never thank him enough for that. He was a role model for me and he shaped me into who I am today. I wish I was able to tell him thank you for everything he did for me. I will never forget him and his sacrifices to help me and everyone else around him. He will forever be in my heart.
It’s hard to put it all in perspective of how influential Mr. Black has been to all of us. This was the man who taught us how to march, fix our instruments, play in tune, and most importantly, how not to fidget. Earning him the name ‘No Fidget Phillip’. He was the one that you would go to if you had issues. I never had that kind of bond with any of the other directors or even my teachers, I dont think I ever will. Mr. Black, you truly were the brightest part of high school for me. I wish I could have let you known that. I will never forget every thing you did for me and the band.
