Obituary

It  is with immeasurable sadness and a broken heart that I share with you the passing of my dear, dear husband and best friend.  Pieter Blonk, age 58, died at Baylor Scott and White Centennial Hospital on Friday November 13, 2020.  He left his earthly body and rose to the heavenly realms to join his beloved family in the eternal and glorious presence of our Heavenly Father. Pieter, amazing husband, loving father, brother, brother in law, colleague, a friend to all he met, was taken away, way too soon and too young from all those who knew him, leaving a huge void in all our hearts. He was born on August 23, 1962 in Naarden, The Netherlands, and spent his childhood in Huizen. Pieter attended the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands, where he earned degrees with honors in Electronics and Computer Programming, culminating  in a PhD in Factory Automation (1991). While interning at Phillips Laboratories in Westchester County, New York, Pieter met the love of his life, Julia Alice Smith. They were married on January 27, 1990 in Ossining, New York. In 1992 Pieter and Julia moved near Albany, New York, where he worked for SynQuest/Viewlocity, a provider of supply chain planning.   While living in New York, they became proud parents of two adopted children, Violina from Bulgaria and Robert from Russia. In 2003, Pieter’s job transferred the family to Texas, where they bought a home in Frisco, and where they continue to reside. New job opportunities opened up for him at ZMS/Expeditors International, where he worked as Senior Developer until his unexpected death.  Pieter truly loved his work and was extremely fond of his colleagues and co-workers. Pieter was an avid reader and had many interests and hobbies. He was an excellent photographer, capturing the uniqueness of the smallest of objects to vast panoramas of majestic landscapes.  But he especially loved taking pictures of his beloved children and Charlie, the family dog!  Pieter loved music-all kinds of music.  He played the organ as a young child and at the University he learned to play the carillon. One of his favorite activities was playing the bells at the Guadalupe Cathedral in Dallas.  He and Julia attended many organ and symphony concerts at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.  Pieter loved traveling and taking his family to various destinations in Europe and the USA. Pieter is survived by his wife, Julia Smith-Blonk, daughter Violina, son Robert, sister/brother-in-law Geraldine and Jan Provoost-Blonk, nephews Vincent and Arthur, aunts Louise Sekeris-van Oudheusden and Dorothea Wilschut-van Oudheusden. Pieter was preceded in death by his father, Gijsbert Blonk who died in 2004 and by his mother, Henny Blonk who passed away very recently, on October 7, 2020. Pieter, we miss you terribly! You radiated so much life, joy, faith, kindness, selflessness, knowledge and brilliance.  Honestly, we don’t understand why this happened but all we can do is put this burden in God’s hands and trust in His unfailing love, wisdom, and guidance for the difficult days ahead. Special sentiments from Violina: My father was an amazing man. A man who took me and my family all over the world. A man who helped me during my darkest times and a man with a smile and laugh that could light up a room. Dad was very slow to anger and always had a smile on his face. He inspired me to be a kind person. He shared with me his love for science, astronomy and math. One of my favorite memories of him is going together to the science museum, where he bought me a little notebook and we watched a documentary on space. Then he quizzed me after the documentary. My dad was more than a dad;  he was one of the few people I really looked up to. I miss you daddy!!  Pieter, we miss you terribly! You radiated so much life, joy, faith, kindness, selflessness, knowledge and brilliance.  Honestly, we don’t understand why this happened, but all we can do is put this burden in God’s hands and trust in His unfailing love, wisdom, and guidance for the difficult days ahead. To our friends and family, Violina, Robert and I are overwhelmed and most grateful for your heartfelt expressions of love, prayers, condolences, kindness and generosity.  We pray that the peace of Jesus Christ be with all of you and comfort you as well. Hold on tightly to your loved ones and always show them your love. With much love and gratitude, Julia, Violina and Robert Blonk Service Details: Visitation for Pieter will be held at Aria Funeral Home located at 19310 Preston Road, Dallas, TX 75252 – Friday, November 20, 2020 – 11:00am-2:00pm Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I am thinking of your family during this difficult time. Pieter was an incredible and generous man, and his devotion to family was admirable. Whenever I needed help with something, I knew I could always count on Pieter. Pieter will always share his incredible knowledge and tricks with the team. I always admire Pieter’s energy and passion for his work. I will cherish the memories I have of Pieter. I remember meeting Pieter for the first time at my interview with Expeditors. His welcoming smile reduced my nervousness during the interview. He always spreads the positivity at the workplace and brings people together on happy hours and weekly lunches. Remembering all the fun memories and wonderful times we spent together as coworkers fills me with joy. Pieter has inspired me a lot with his dedication to work and family. I miss my desk mate a lot.

I am so sorry for your loss, Julia, Violina and Robert. Pieter was admired and dearly loved. I remember how joyful he was and how willing he was to serve. I remember the day I accompanied him up the Guadeloupe Cathedral tower to watch him play the carillon. I remember how humble Pieter was. Not mentioning his accomplishments just using his gifts and talents with joy and enthusiasm. We all miss Pieter, terribly. God bless and comfort you in your grief.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
