Young, Terrance Robert

October 5, 1923 - January 31, 2021

Terrance (Terry) Robert Young, 97, died in Carrollton, Texas on Sunday, January 31, 2021.

Terry was born October 5, 1923 in Arbroath, Scotland.  He immigrated to the United States with his family when he was 18 months old, sailing on the British ocean liner, RMS Cameronia.  After arriving at the Port of New York at Ellis Island, the family settled in Wycliff, Ohio where Terry grew up during the depression.  He graduated from Wycliff High where he was active in several high school sports.  Following graduation, Terry enlisted in the Marine Corps, serving as squad leader in a Raider battalion in the south pacific theater of WWII.  He fought in the battles of Bougainville, Guam, and Iwo Jima.

After the war, Terry married Donna Jean Engleman in Cleveland, Ohio.  Shortly thereafter, the couple traveled to Texas via motorcycle in 1946 where they lived for the rest of their lives and raised their family, first in Austin, then San Antonio, and finally Dallas.  Terry was proud to be a Texan and felt most at home at the family’s ranch in the Texas hill country of the 1950’s and 1960’s and at the family’s lake house in Austin.  His career in sales spanned 5 decades with various companies. He retired after serving as executive vice president of sales for Westgate of California and Orchid paper products. Terry loved animals, especially dogs, that were always an integral part of his family. He was an avid environmentalist who was active in various groups including the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society.

Terry was preceded in death by his wife Donna, son-in-law Eddy Nichter, parents Robert and Isabelle Young, sister Dorothy Jameson, brother-in-law Henry Jameson, and sister Pat Poling.  He is survived by his daughter, Laura and son-law Mike Garner of Lewisville, Texas, daughter Kathleen and son-in-law John Pharr of Garland, Texas, and daughter Robin Nichter of Anna, Texas; his 7 grandchildren that include Erin Wlazlowski and husband Ted, Carrie Garner, Matthew Pharr and wife Carissa, Kevin Pharr and finance Jessica Bargmann, Alicia Foster, Daniel Nichter and wife Moon, and Paul Nichter; his 8 great-grandchildren, Teddy, Matty, Emily, Abby, Katy, Lillian, Adeline, and Wyatt, as well as two nephews, a niece and cousins.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the staffs of Avalon Memory Care in Carrollton, Texas; Reliant Hospice Care; and Twin Rivers Assisted Living in Richardson, Texas.  Their love and compassion were beyond measure.
