Obituary

Jack Harrison Burgess, 88, went to his heavenly home on February 14, 2021. He was born in Indianola, Iowa, on May 23, 1932, the only child of John Heiman and Iola Harrison Burgess. He attended school in 12 different cities, graduating from Jackson High, Jackson, MS in 1949. Jack earned a B.S.M.E. from Mississippi State in 1953 and was commissioned during the Korean war as 1st Lieutenant in US Army Artillery at Fort Monroe, VA, serving until discharged in 1956. A Registered Professional Engineer, and VP of Design and Negotiations and a Director of Sam P. Wallace Co, he led the firm in the innovative concept of negotiated contracting in commercial construction. As a mechanical subcontractor, he worked with leading developers, architects, and consulting engineers, whose projects included high-rise buildings, hospitals, hotels, airports, and other construction in the U.S. and overseas.  He continued his career as Chr. of the Board of Continental Mechanical, and then opened his own firm, Magnum Mechanical, contracting with Southwestern Bell for their Dallas headquarters. He loved and appreciated life and family, enjoyed flying his Cherokee 6, gourmet cooking for friends and family, and the lake house at Cedar Creek Lake. Holidays were a time of laughter and conversation and always sharing one of his delicious cheesecakes. Jack’s life changed when he surrendered his life to Christ. He looked forward to attending worship on Sundays at Prestonwood Baptist Church and then online until his death. He was predeceased by his parents, his ex-wife Jane; his son John, and stepson Robert Moore. Jack will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 45 years, Billie. He is also survived by sons, Michael Burgess and Stephen Burgess, and daughter, Julie McGee. He was a loving stepfather to Catharine Ray and husband, Justin; Marcia Wright and husband, Larry; Leeanna Demers and husband, Henry. Jack had 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. His life will be celebrated in the Chapel at Prestonwood Baptist Church, Plano TX on April 26th at 10:00 A.M. with family visitation at 9:30.  A private burial will be at DFW National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Prestonwood Baptist Church/Life Recovery Ministry or to BridgeBuilders.org. Please leave the family condolences and share memories on this website.

I lived across the street from the Burgesses. John and I graduated from WT White together. I remember Mr. Burgess was the one who gave me my first airplane ride. My condolences and thoughts to your family.

Jack was a blessing in my life, as the husband of my dear friend, Billie. They were a team in the truest sense of the word, so Jack was active in supporting our Bible Fellowship Class at Prestonwood Baptist Church. He used his many gifts to cook for us, serve us in their home, help us with odd jobs at home, and greet us with a smile as he sat with us ladies in church on Sunday morning. It gave me joy every week to see him walking up the steps with Billie to sit in our pew, always with a smile. I miss that! I’m thankful to have known such a wonderful gentleman, and pray that His family will be comforted by the good memories.

Jack was such a blessing to all the ladies in our Sunday School class. He was never too proud to sit next to his lovely wife amidst three pews full of ladies in church. I know Jack helped many of our ladies with odd jobs in their homes. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all.

This pains me to see this. We are Matthews Financial Services and we manage an account for Billie. We have tried to reach out over the last year or so and we can see why there was no response. If there is a sibling who could reach out to us that would be great. Our number is 972-242-7351. Thank you and our prayers and thoughts are with the family.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
