Ward, Helen R.
Obituary
Helen Antonet Ratliffe Ward, 88, passed away on September 10, 2013. Helen was born on October 14, 1924 in San Antonio, Texas to the late George Thomas and Louise Blair Ratliffe. She is survived by her three loving daughters, Carole Ward of Lewisville, TX, Kathy Walling and husband, Michael of McKinney, TX and Lucy Wineman of Highland Village, TX; brother, Tom Ratliffe and wife Phyllis of Blue Ash, OH, sister, Carol Bettes and husband, Dale of Wilburton, OK and sister-in-law Bobbie Ratliffe of Norcross, GA; grandchildren, Susan White, Callie Newton and husband, Matthew, and Kyle Wineman; great-grandchildren, Trevor and Brynne White, Ghirin and Nolan Newton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her devoted husband of over 46 years, James H. Ward; sister, Mary Louise Dunn and brother, Gene Ratliffe. Helen attended Vanderbilt University to study nursing. However, when the love of her life swept her off her feet, she transferred to and graduated from Louisiana Tech University. She married James on March 17, 1946. Helen spent her life in service to others, first to her husband and children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and she cared for her parents as they aged as well. She led by example as a strong Christian woman. Helen was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church, Texarkana, AR before moving to Highland Village, TX where Trinity Presbyterian Church, Flower Mound, TX became her church home. She had a passion for giving, be it in time, talent or anything else she could give and often volunteered in church, school, charitable, and service organizations. She enjoyed mentoring the young through PTA functions, Girl Scouts, church classes or activities and more. She was very creative and her artistic talents could be seen from her Young at Heart table decorations to her beautiful gardens to her own paintings. She gave more than she ever took and loved enough for ten life times. Spending time with her family at home, at the family cabin, on vacations, or watching one of the kids perform brought her the greatest joy. She could bring a smile to your face any day. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 5500 Morriss Road, Flower Mound, TX 75028. A future memorial celebration will take place at First Presbyterian Church, 516 Pecan Street, Texarkana, AR 71854.
