Obituary
W. Dale Hoffman, 72, or Irving, Texas died peacefully with his brothers and sisters at his side praying the rosary at 1:30 AM on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Solvay Hospice House, Duluth, Minnesota. He was born at home during a blizzard on October 1, 1940 in Granite Township, Minnesota. He graduated with Honors from Proctor High School in 1958 and served 4 years in the USAF. Dale was proud to have been a member of Moody’s Marching Band with trips to New Orleans and Washington, D.C. He played the saxophone for the band and the oboe for the orchestra. In 1960 Dale enlisted in the USAF, promoted to rank of A1C in 1962, he was stationed at Lackland AFB in Texas, and NORAD sites in Minot, North Dakota and Greenland. Computer skills learned while serving in the USAF led to his career with Control Data and Abbott Labs. While working in Atlanta, Georgia he met and married Shirlene Banks in 1968 and eventually settled in Texas to raise his sons. Dale was also a 31-year member of the local Knights of Columbus Council 5243 in Irving, Texas. Dale enjoyed hunting with his sons for wild pigs, deer, and doves. Dale also loved his flower gardens, especially growing roses, a trait he inherited from his Dad. Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Alex L. and Mildred, sister Sharon and brother Roger. Survivors include his wife, Shirlene, sons, Jeffrey and Shawn; brothers, Fr. Dennis, Ken, Daniel (Kathleen) and Alex; sisters, Judy, Diane, and Sheila; 12 nieces and 6 nephews; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and his very special Highead Festival and Sammy’s Pizza companions. The family would like to thank the staff at Essentia Health, St. Eligius and especially Solvay Hospice House for the loving care given to Dale during his time with them. Memorials are preferred to the Colvay Hospice House. The immediate family would also like to thank the staff at Essentia Health, St. Eligus and especially Solvay Hospice House for the loving care given to Dale during his time with them in Minnesota. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or Holy Family of Nazareth Catholic Church. Visitation was held from 4 to 6 PM on Sunday, September 22, 2013 with Memorial Mass starting at 6 PM at St. Rose of Lima Church, Proctor, Minnesota. Rev. Fr. Dennis Hoffman officiating Memorial Mass with military honors will be held in Texas on a later date. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Dale’s church, holy Family of Nazareth Catholic Church, located at 2323 Cheyenne Street, Irving, Texas on Saturday, October 5, at 10 AM. Rev. Msgr. Jerome Desman will be officiating the Memorial Mass. A reception will follow after the Memorial Mass in the Parish Hall.
