Parsons, Donald "Joe"
Obituary
Donald “Joe” Parsons was born December 27, 1944 in Dumas, Texas to Bonnie and W.C. (Dub) Parsons. He attended elementary school in Cactus, Texas and Jr. High and High School in Dumas. A natural athlete, Joe was a star quarterback for the 1961 and 1962 Dumas Demon State Championship football team, and was a starter for the 1962 State Championship basketball team. In 1963, Joe’s senior year, they were defeated in the State Championship basketball game by a very narrow margin.
Joe served his country as an MP at a missile site on the DMZ in South Korea during the Vietnam conflict.
Joe married Tim Ann Dooley on June 09, 1973 at the First United Methodist Church in Sunray, Texas.
He attended the University of North Texas and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and an MBA in Business and Economics all within three years.
Joe worked in a variety of fields including Otis Engineering (now Haliburton) as a Quality Control Manager and a car salesman where he achieved recognition as one of the top 50 salesmen in the US for Mazda. This was achieved with no previous experience in car sales.
However, his greatest love came as a teacher. Joe was working on becoming a certified elementary teacher, but was unable to finish his teaching credentials due to health reasons. He didn’t let that stop him. Joe became a substitute teacher for Amarillo ISD, and touched the lives and earned the love of many children. Teachers would regularly requested Joe to fill in for them in their absence because they knew he took teaching seriously, and would get the job done with great skill but, more importantly, he would have fun with the students while doing it. His favorite grades were second and third grades. All the kids affectionately called him “Mr. P”. Tim Ann was always finding little notes from the students in his pockets telling him how much they loved him, and what a really cool teacher he was.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, W.C. and Bonnie Parsons, a brother, Eddie Lee and two sisters, Bonnie “Marie” Owens and Eva Bell Venable.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Tim Ann, a son, Conner and wife Kate, a granddaughter, Cleo, and another granddaughter to be born in December all of Dallas and a brother, Larry and wife Doris of Stratford, Texas, and many nieces and nephews, in-laws and friends.
He was one of the good, fun guys and will be missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 P.M., on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at

Tim Ann, I am a classmate of Joe’s. My heart is breaking for you and your family. My condolences goes out to you during this time and in your future dealing with Joe’s loss. Much love to you, Karen
Tim Ann, I’m also a classmate of Joe’s from Cactus. My concolences go out to your and your family and pray for the peace that only God can give us all at this time.
Love to your family.
Tim Ann, I knew Joe my entire life (60+years). I send you and your family my condolences. My God bless and keep you strong during this chapter in your life. I will continue to pray for you.
Tim Ann, A good man is the best tombstone. Those who played with him, loved him,and were helped by him will remember him because he carved his name on our hearts and not on marble. I send my sincere condolences.
I was a classmate of Joe’s,starting in the second grade at Cactus. My husband,Bill, also played football with him. We are truely sorry for your family’s loss. May God bless you and your loved ones.
Went to school with Joe for all 12 years and grew up at Cactus with his family. So many great memories from growing up at Cactus. My most heartfelt condolences to you and the family. He was a great guy. “When someone we love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure.”
Tim Ann, I was a sophmore when Joe was a Senior and we played football together along with all the other guys that were his classmates. Also knew him from West Texas State when he went to college for a year or so in Canyon. We would all run around some and have a beer now and then. He was a good guy and a good friend to many people, but then, you know that . . Sorry for your loss and the loss of Joe, he was one of the “good guys” !!!!!
Joe’s parents (Bonnie and Dub) and my parents (Gorden and Mary Lou Hart) were the best of friends — when they lived in Cactus, and later in Dumas. I can remember that when we were little, we would go to Bonnie and Dub’s house and always had so much fun when Joe was there as he was such a character!
My condolences to all the family, and may God bless and keep you during this sad time.
There were many outstanding athletes with Joe but many called him “Ace” because he was a leader with a heart that represented our school.
Tim Ann – The Parsons lived next door to us in Cactus. He was the Idol of every Cactus kid. He treated us all with kindness {even though he was the “Biggest Star of the Panhandle”}.
My love goes out to all of Joe’s family. Joe and Larry are often in our thoughts as we were always a close knit Cactus family. My brother Billy Wayne and sister Ramona and Mom Jessie will be praying for the family.
We were very sorry to here about Joe’s death. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family at this time. God bless you.

Timmy: I have such wonderful fun memeories of you and Joe forty years ago. He adored you so much. He told me that quite often! I am so sorry to hear he is gone. Gone but never forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
Joe was a great guy. We were neighbors at Cactus & went all the way through school together. My prayers go out to his family. He will be missed! Linda
So sorry to hear of Joe’s death. I was his FB coach at Dumas and thought the world of him. He was a very good FB player and full of confidence. During our final game in 1962 we were behind at one time and I was talking with Joe on the sideline. He could tell that I was nervous and he said,”Coach, don’t worry, we got ’em.” And, we did get ’em. Just sorry that he is gone. Coach T
I just heard (i know it’s late) but I just wanted to thank Mr. P. It’s been six years since he was a substitute in my class but he has always been my favourite sub because he was dedicated to teaching us and absolutely made our days. He was amazing and I’ll always remember him. Thank you Mr. P.
