Obituary

Barrett Dickson, 48, passed away on October 12, 2013 at 10:55pm, surrounded by his family and close friends, after a courageous battle.  At that moment the world lost an honorable, brave, honest, devoted, loving, caring, focused and determined man. Barrett is survived by wife of 30 years April, cherished son Chad, adored granddaughter Gema, Kayli Stiles(Gema’s mom and important part of our family), Mother and Stepfather Jean and Doug Meissner, Brother and Sister in Law Ted and Janice Dickson, Brother Harold, Mother in Law, Andrea Driskell, Brother in Law and Sister in Law Steve and Kelly Kennedy, Nephews Braz and Brooks Kennedy, Neices Jennifer Robins, Melissa Dickson, & Emily Kennedy, Great Nephew Carson Robins, Best Friend and Confidant Mike Shannon as well as other Nephews and Neices and Many Dear Friends and Co Workers. He is preceded in death by his father Gene Dickson, and Father in Law, Mentor and Friend Myron Driskell. Barrett was completely dedicated and driven in his work as a retail manager.  He loved every moment, most recently with Lowes in Plano as an Asst.Store Manager, where he became close to so many.  His start with Lowes 7 years ago was the beginning of a life changing experience with a company philosophy.  He never looked back.  His retail beginnings were at 16, when he started with Tom Thumb as a bag boy and quickly worked his way up, leaving the company as an Asst.Store Director in 2006. Barrett’s Self Professed greatest self growth was his study of Martial Arts beginning in 1996.  He attained a 6th degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, Black Belts in Kenpo and Belts in Weapons under the instruction and loving guidance of his Sensei and Friend Diane Reeve, founder of Vision Martial Arts.  He has many great, lifelong Friends there who will, along with all who loved him, carry on his Legacy of Never Giving Up, no matter what Life presents you with. There will be a casual Celebration of Life for Barrett on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm @ Vision Martial Arts 3019 W. 15th Street, Plano, TX, 75075. Arrangements are under the direction of: ARIA Cremation Service and Funeral Home  19310 Preston Road, Dallas, Texas 75252 214-306-6700

Barrett will be sadly missed. He was
a wonderful person and loved his family. He spoke about his granddaughter frequently and how proud he was to be a grandfather. I am sure that Barrett will be watching over her from above.

The world of Martial Arts has lost a true warrior. Barrett was the essence of the tenets of Tae Kwon Do and we will truly miss him.

It has been the highest honor to have Barrett as a student and friend for over 18 years. He was the consummate example of integrity, perseverance and indomitable spirit. We are fortunate to have the lifelong influence he contributed to every instructor and student he trained. He was admired and loved by all and I am lucky to have been his instructor.

Barrett was a ‘can do’ kind of man! He deeply loved and respected his wife April and worked hard to be an example of what a man should be for Chad. Gema was the twinkle in his eye and Barrett wore many tiaras for that baby girl! He will be deeply missed by anyone blessed enough to have known him.

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
