A Flowers Petal

 A Flowers petal

so slowly

reaching its ornate beauty

 Its presence

need not be understood

only perceived

as natures perfection itself

 Nor dispirited

as the breath of life

leisurely subsides

its beautiful delicate feature

 As one must realize

it occurs

as restless as the wind

 to make way

for a blossom

that tomorrow will bring

-James Nichols

Dr. Nichols was so encouraging about my desire to become a veterinarian. She always asked about how school was going and trying to get me to apply right away. She gave me all of her old school texts and notes. It was so unbelievably generous, how much she wanted to help. She was always pointing things out to me on patients during exams. Not only was she a great teacher, but she had a wonderful bedside manner. She would cry right alongside clients during euthanasias, and I will forever remember the conversations she had about quality of life when people were having to make a tough decision about their pet. She really knew how to put things into perspective. Outside of work, she was always so positive when I talked to her. Asked how I was doing, always inquired after my father when I told her he had been diagnosed with a rare lymphoma, and just did her best to enjoy life.

I met Dr. Nichols (Barbara) while in Veterinary School at Texas A & M and she was a good friend to Glenda and myself. A wonderful sense of humor and always ready to laugh. I can still hear her say, "Can you believe it!!!" I will miss a very good friend and colleague.

Dr. Nichols was one of a kind. When I worked with her the first time I was nervous because I heard she was "difficult". That proved to be false, she just liked things being done right. She motivated and supported a lot of people, including me. She is the reason I am working as a vet tech now and doing something I actually love. I cannot forget her love of ACTUAL books and dislike of texts. And her laugh. I'll never forget that. Or the time she rode in the backseat to the EAC administering CPR to a puppy that had collapsed after getting vaccinated. She left in a panic and forgot her purse at the Petco- now that's hard-core. Love you Dr. Nichols!

Today is the memorial in Barb's honor. I feel surrounded by her love as I pet Annie, one of her beloved kitties. Barbara was one of my best friends. We were study partners in vet school. After we graduated, we kept in contact. We went to a week long seminar once a year together every year and talked for hours on the phone frequently about difficult or funny cases. She always had funny stories! I miss her so much. She was an amazing person.

My mom and Barbara have been good friends since I was a child. What I remember most about Barbara was her love of animals. I adored her dog Spencer and loved getting to throw frisbees for him in her back yard! I also remember when she had that cat that had escaped from the vet's and found it's way back to her house the whole way across Dallas, after several months. Barbara had an amazing spirit and I can't believe she's gone. Much too soon!

Oh, my. I am so sad and sorry to read this. My sweet cousin, Barbara. Jim, if you read this, I'd love to reconnect. Barbara treated my dog and we told stories about singing Little Nash Rambler in her bedroom on Nashwood (?) Such a spirit. All of my love, Nancy

Dr. Barbara Nichols, my sister-in-law was a very special person. She cared for family, friends and animals of all kinds. She loved cats and had several of her own because she could not turn one away that needed a good home. She fought a long hard battle with cancer and would not give up. We will miss her so very much…
