 January 10, 2014

Obituary

Carl C. Farmer of Dallas passed away on January 10, 2014 unexpectedly of heart problems.  He was born June 4, 1949 in Akron, Ohio.  Carl received his engineering degree from Tufts University and spent his career in that field.  Carl is survived by his wife, Shelia, his daughter, Alissa and his sister, Ellene Whitmore of Kansas City, Missouri.  Carl never met a stranger, loved the ocean, Jimmy Buffet and the Dallas Cowboys.  He was an avid marksman and in every sense of the word, a true gentleman and a kind soul. A private family gathering is planned.  In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Operation Kindness in Carrollton, Texas or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the direction of: ARIA Cremation Service and Funeral Home 19310 Preston Road Dallas, Texas 75252 214-306-6700

My sympathy and prayers go out to Carl’s family on his sudden passing. I only knew Carl for a short period of time but he was one of the friendliest and cheerful people to be around – no matter what else was going on. He never met a stranger and always made others around him feel welcome and appreciated. He will be missed by all that knew him. May God bring peace and comfort to you in this time of loss.

Sally and I want to send our deepest sympathy to Sheila, Alissa and the rest of Carl’s family. Carl has been part of my life since the day he started working for my father. Over the years Carl took time to mentor me and support me in any way he could. We had a chance to work together at Fluor which I greatly cherished. After I left Fluor I was honored to learn we would work together again on the Electric Power Conference. Carl was always upbeat and positive and never had a negative word about anyone. Carl will be greatly missed by me and my entire family.

Carl loved to tell stories and share his experiences. I remember asking him a question about one of the many acronyms the industry uses for power plants so I could sound half way intelligent when I spoke on the matter. He came into my office, sat down and proceeded to tell me about all the parts of a boiler and how they worked. He also drew a diagram to help me visualize it. It was so very obvious in that moment how much he enjoyed passing on what he knew. He was a good friend and a great person. I miss him.

Where do I start, My heart goes out to everyone that Carl touched with his presence. I have so many wonderful memories I could write a book. What a blessing I had to be part of his life especially when I lived in Dallas. Carl was always kind and tried to assure everyone was happy. He was a constant even when everything around him was chaos. I always knew that no matter what, he would be the voice of reason. Carl will be missed but thought of often. –Shelia and Alissa – I hope that you both find comfort in each other as that is what I believe Carl would have wanted. – Please know that you have family – Including myself that is here and has always been here for you. Here is the cool thing about family – you can’t get rid of them – we are here to stay. – Know I love you both with all my heart. – I think of you often and will continue to do so. –

Dear Shelia, I was shocked and saddened to hear the news of Carl’s passing. I knew Carl for almost forty years. From those early days when he was in Dalls sales for CE, throuh the years when I had the pleasure of being his boss to later when we ran across each other Carl defined the word Gentleman. He was always thoughtful and supportive of everyone he came in contact with. His business relationships were sincere and caring but never as important as his love of you and your daughter. Carl was a loving and caring gentleman and the world will miss him but we were all better off for having had the opportunity to know him.

I so truly loved getting to spend time with Carl in whatever capacity. After Mark passed he was so generous in the time he was able and willing to spend with me. The countless trips to the lake where we got to grill, ride jet-skis, boats, and maybe the most unique and memorable event of mowing the lawn were so wonderful and necessary at a time in my life where I needed it most. We were so sad to hear of Carl’s sudden passing this last week. I have many good memories from my younger days of Carl & Shelia always making time to spend with me when in Dallas.

I often came to Dallas with my Dad’s family or for a summer vacation at my Grandparents house. Carl ALWAYS made time to come pick me up and take me to their house to spend time together. I remember going for a run or two with him, having a great time racing toy cars on a track set up on their dining room table, and of course swimming in their “B” shaped pool.

I’ve quoted Carl often on his philosophy of cars in the years since he told me, “The way I see it, the car replaced the horse” His point was that it’s just to get places and he didn’t care much about it as a “baby” so to speak.

Shelia & Carl would ask every time I visited if I had a girlfriend yet. When I did meet my future wife, their family made sure to come to KC for our wedding, which we were grateful for.

Later, after Andrea & I were married with kids, Carl made time to come visit us while on one of his business trips to Kansas City and we were also able to have a good time with him and our two young daughters at his Lake house in Texas.

What stands out to me most about Carl was how he made it a priority to spend time together every opportunity we had.

    We miss him.

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
