Underwood, Mary A.

Mary Ann Underwood, 83, of Grand Prairie Texas passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, January 9, 2014, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Grand Prairie on April 20, 1930 to the late Edmon and Lura Keith. Mary Ann received her BA in Education from Baylor University in 1951 where she also minored in music. She married James Underwood in June 1954 and they lived together in Grand Prairie before relocating to Lake City, Colorado in 1984 upon James’ retirement.
Mary Ann was a 5th grade teacher until she started her family in 1955. She was an avid member of First Baptist Church Grand Prairie for many years and served as church pianist and later organist. While in Colorado, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake City where she also served as organist and then in more recent years she was an active member of Matthew Road Baptist Church.  Mary Ann’s love of music continued throughout her life including accompaniment of Choraleer Mission trips, community choirs, as well as playing for her personal enjoyment.

Upon his retirement in 1984, Mary Ann and James enjoyed many years traveling with good friends including an extended stay in New Zealand as well as numerous trips to Alaska.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband James, two sons: Keith Underwood of Broken Bow, OK and Kent Underwood of Arlington, TX.  She is also survived by eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren who were all the joy of her life. Above all else, we will miss Mary Ann’s beautiful smile, sweet nature, and her ever present optimistic spirit.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Matthew Road Baptist Missionary Fund.

A memorial service will be held at Matthew Road Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Saturday January 11, 2014.
