Obituary

Richard Niles Tonnesen of Richardson, Texas was born in Dubuque, Iowa, June 9, 1940 and passed away peacefully February 4, 2014 at the age of 73.  A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Coppell on Friday, Feb 7, 2014 at 10:00 AM with a reception immediately following. Richard was preceded in death by his father, William Andrew Tonnesen and his mother, Rose Marie (Riedi) Tonnesen. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Janet Ann (Fischer) Tonnesen, two children, son Steven (Cindee) Tonnesen and daughter Diane (Greg) Walter and two granddaughters, Lauren and Katie Walter. Richard joined the Naval Reserve Training Center as he began his senior year in high school in 1957.  Richard graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1962 with a Bachelor Degree in Physics. He attended US Naval Officer Candidate School and received his commission as a United States Naval Officer in August, 1962.  He served 3 years active duty in the Navy, serving on the island of Adak, Alaska and at a Naval Facility Base in Ferndale, California. After resigning his commission in 1965 he came to Dallas, Texas and worked for several years at Texas Instruments. While in the Navy he became very interested in computers and learned he had a special knack for programming computers. He subsequently worked for Raldon Home Developer, writing programs for their accounting and construction scheduling and development. Later he worked for Harris Communications, Harris Adacom, and retired from Open Connect in 2001. Richard was a gentle, quiet, softly spoken man with a keen sense of humor and an unquenchable interest in science and history.  Richard’s interest in electronics and mechanics and his desire to own his own computer in the early 70’s led him to design and build a piano roll reader and piano roll perforator and write the programs to run the equipment. What started out as a hobby became a part-time business (mostly a labor of love) of punching paper piano rolls for collectors of various types of player and reproducing pianos. Richard was diagnosed in 1998 with Parkinson’s Disease and the progression of the disease made it difficult to maintain the equipment and 30 years after punching its first piano rolls, the Custom Music Rolls perforator ceased production in Richardson.  The machinery now resides in San Antonio and is still producing paper piano rolls. The family would like to thank the staff at Presbyterian Village North for the loving care they gave him during the past 15 months.  He was loved.  He will be missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to http://www.parkinsonvoiceproject.org.   Arrangements are under the direction of: ARIA Cremation Service & Funeral Home 19310 Preston Road, Dallas, Texas 75252 214) 306-6700

    To Janet & Family:

It is with sadness that I just read today, Feb. 16th. of Richard’s passing. Richard and I went back to grade school at Fulton and Janet to Senior. I knew Richard as a quiet and most
intelligent person – an exceptional person. You all have my most sincere condolences – I know he will be missed by all! As a fellow U.S. Navy veteran I say ” Anchors Away ” and God’s Speed Richard!

It was with deep regret that I read about the passing of Richard. Janet, you and Richard were two of the most wonderful people, I had the pleasure of knowing. When we would get together, it seemed as though time had not passed. I felt so special when you two visited me, when I spent a few days in Dallas. May God bless you and your family

"Nothing prepares you for the grief you go through when losing a child. I called this funeral home at 2:00 am broken and could barely talk. The amount of compassion and empathy they showed me immediately let me know I found the right place to cremate my son. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism, SINCERE concern, and commitment to making sure my son was honored in the most respectful way. I hope this Funeral home values her as much as my family and I do."

"I can’t say enough about how helpful and professional Dusty Martin, the funeral director at the Aria Cremation location on NW Highway has been. From my initial call, he was kind and informative. My friend died at home while on hospice and she was picked up in about an hour after receiving the call from the hospice nurse. The person who arrived to pick her up was also very professional/respectful and allowed us to take as much time with her as we wished. When I met with Dusty the next day about arrangements, he explained the process and options available without being pushy or trying to “sell” extras. Throughout the process, he kept me informed and, for example, was careful to be certain I understood the cost of the obituary I wanted and offered some options for reducing that cost if I wished. When I stopped by for another reason and started talking about some of the problems I was having with the pictures and media I hoped to use at a memorial lunch I was planning, he not only listened patiently but offered technology advice and let me use his personal media player. I have had experience arranging cremations for four others using two other local companies, and this experience with Dusty at Aria has been by far the best one I have had."

"My Daddy’s service and our family experience at Aria Northwest Highway was truly blessed. Funeral Director Dustin Martin is the kind of person that you would like to see on a more regular basis – but in his industry – you hope to not see him that often. That being said – THANK YOU DUSTIN for your unending kindness, compassion and friendship through the process. Meeting you and discussing Dallas History, Find A Grave and my Dad’s lifelong contributions to the great City of Dallas was simply wonderful! In memory of my dad James A. Dodd, Sr. – I want to personally thank you and let you know that you made everything better in that moment. Your calling to “Be There” is spot on. Aria has a one in a million guy in you! Bling Blinky of TEXAS Shout Out: God Bless You!!"
