A Celebration of Life for Douglas “Doug” Eugene Smith, 54, of Plano will be held at 11:00 A.M., Friday, May 2, 2014 at NORTH DALLAS FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL 2710 Valley View Lane, Dallas, Texas 75234.

Doug was born in Decatur, Illinois and moved to the Dallas/Ft Worth metroplex in 1979. He worked many jobs during his lifetime. He enjoyed his time as a Texas Peace Officer. You could always count on a few good “cop stories” from him. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He loved fishing. He was a storm watcher – he would be happy to point out ‘hook echoes’ to anyone that cared to look at the radar with him. He was always the family photographer and had a sixth sense about when the camera was pointed at him! He was an animal lover and dog trainer. He loved all things gun related. He was always cleaning someone’s gun, loading ammunition, or putting an edge on any knife he felt wasn’t sharp enough to shave with. He was a lifetime member of the Dallas Pistol Club who shot and volunteered there for many years. He WAS the neighborhood watch and made sure that everyone was safe. His son Carson referred to him as ‘an awesome spanker’ on more than one occasion.
He was a beloved Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Friend . He will be greatly missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his brother Dan in 1990. He is survived by his wife Cindy, children D’Andra, Tiffany, Carson, Cooper, parents Darrell and Doris Smith, siblings Dawn Ryan and husband Rich, Darren Smith and wife Jenny, grandchildren Evelyn Ing, Korbin and Lauren Zimmerman.

I have many memories growing up @ Tabernacle Baptist Church in Decatur & Doug was always a part. You are missed, Doug. We'll meet again. Give Dan a big hug from all us TAB youth of the '70's.

Doug was the first person I met at DPC. Instantly and always made me feel welcome. He encouraged my progress. one of the 'good guys' who will be always remembered and missed.

Ellen and I met Doug and Cindy shortly after we moved to Texas from what Doug would always call "The Peoples Republic of Illinois". He got us into the Dallas Pistol Club, taught Ellen hot to shoot , and was always there when we needed him. When we got into ballooning, Doug was one of the first to volunteer to crew for us. He enjoyed being part of our balloon crew and the times he got to climb into the basket and fly. When we needed him to crew, he was always there. When our dog passed away, I was on travel, but Doug was there. When I just needed a friend to talk to, I could always count on Doug. We'll miss and remember him always.

I knew Doug through DPC and the Carrollton PD. We were each others liaisons bewteen the two entities and spent many hours talking and working out the problems between the two organizations. I think the biggest key to our success, was we worked together and didnt let politics get in the way. Doug was easy to work with and over the 20+ years we worked together, I could not have asked for anyone better to have been there to do what we did. He will be missed

Knew Doug for many years as a fellow life member and board director of Dallas Pistol Club. Doug was a natural leader and had a good ear. He was easy to talk to and confide in. He is missed already by many but not forgotten.

I'm sorry to hear of Doug's passing and condolences to the family. Doug was a respected mentor for me at DPC and his work on previous GSSF matches will be missed.
